For the mountain biker who wants one bike to do it all: Sunday rides with friends, day-long outings, a few bike park sessions and even a regional raid. It is aimed at riders who prefer a versatile, reliable bike to a specialised machine.
Alpha aluminium, Trek's expertise. On Trek's alloy scale, the Alpha NEXT Platinum of this Fuel EX 8 sits above the Alpha Platinum of the Procaliber and Slash 8, and well above the Alpha Silver of the Marlin. The frame takes the ideas of the carbon version: interchangeable rocker, adjustable lower shock mount, adjustable progression and down tube hatch. It keeps a threaded BSA 73 bottom bracket and ISCG 05 tabs for a chain guide.
| Alpha Silver | Alpha NEXT Platinum | OCLV Mountain | |
| Level | Trek's entry-level alloy | The most refined of the Alpha alloys | Trek's mountain bike carbon |
| Construction | Alpha aluminium, hardtail frame | Alpha aluminium, adjustable Fuel platform | OCLV process tuned for impacts |
| Reference bike | Marlin 4 to 7 | Fuel EX 5, 8 and 9 | Fuel EX 9.8 and 9.9 |
| What it means | Simple and affordable, no rear suspension | 4.95 kg frameset in M, tough and more affordable | 3.31 kg frameset in M, 1.64 kg less |
Put simply: aluminium costs 1.64 kg on the frameset compared with OCLV Mountain carbon (4.95 kg versus 3.31 kg in M), but it copes better with rock strikes and car-park tip-overs. On a trail bike that goes out every weekend, it is a sensible choice we are happy to stand behind.
The dual-compound 2.50-inch Brevard Pro tyres offer a good contact patch without being too slow on smooth tracks. Set up tubeless at low pressure, they grip on the red earth and rock slabs of the Salagou as well as on the dry, dusty ground of the garrigue.
The Rapid Drive 108 rear hub engages almost instantly: on a technical climb, every quarter turn of the pedals is transmitted with no dead time. On the maintenance side, the Eagle 70 drivetrain shares the T-Type principle of more expensive groupsets, with simplified derailleur adjustment.
| Model | Frame | Fork / rear | Drivetrain | Weight (M) |
| Fuel EX 5 | Alpha NEXT Platinum alloy | RockShox Recon 150 / 145 mm | Shimano Deore 1x12 | 16.88 kg |
| Fuel EX 8 | Alpha NEXT Platinum alloy | Fox Rhythm 36, 150 / 145 mm | SRAM Eagle 70 1x12 | 16.58 kg |
| Fuel EX 9 Eagle 90 | Alpha NEXT Platinum alloy | RockShox Lyrik Ultimate, 150 / 145 mm | SRAM Eagle 90 1x12 | 16.58 kg |
| Fuel EX 9 XT | Alpha NEXT Platinum alloy | Fox Factory 36, 150 / 145 mm | Shimano XT 1x12 | 17.14 kg |
Our take: compared with the Fuel EX 5, this Fuel EX 8 gains the Fox 36 fork and Brevard Pro tyres while weighing 300 g less. For finer suspension adjustment, the Fuel EX 9 XT and its Fox Factory units take over.

LVR sizing advice If you are hesitating between two sizes, take the shorter one for tight, twisting trails, the longer one for riding fast on open tracks. Dropper post travel increases with size; the S pairs a 27.5-inch rear wheel with a 29-inch front.

| Can I do a raid on it? | Yes, with 145 mm at the rear it stays efficient over long distances, even on rough courses. |
| Are the 2.50 tyres slow? | A little on the road, but their grip more than makes up for it on the trails. |
| How should the suspension be maintained? | A seal and oil service every season, which we carry out in the workshop. |
| Does the flecked grey show the dirt? | It hides dust and small scratches well. |
|
The LVR Cycles verdict The most versatile Fuel EX 8, at ease from raids to technical rides, with generous tyres and effective Fox suspension. Its lithium grey flecked with black stays understated and easy to live with.
