Designed for the trail rider who loves long rides in the mountains, exploring new trails and taking in the scenery, on a bike that needs no attention. It suits riders who want the comfort of electronics so they can ride with a clear mind.
Alpha aluminium, Trek's expertise. The Fuel EX 9 XT Di2 pairs Shimano's electronic groupset with Trek's most advanced aluminium, Alpha NEXT Platinum, the top tier above Alpha Platinum and Alpha Silver. The frame retains all the Gen 7 options: adjustable progression, geometry changes via interchangeable parts, a down tube storage hatch, a ZS headset and an easy-to-maintain threaded BSA bottom bracket.
| Alpha Silver | Alpha NEXT Platinum | OCLV Mountain | |
| Level | Trek's entry-level alloy | The most refined of the Alpha alloys | Trek's mountain bike carbon |
| Construction | Alpha aluminium, hardtail frame | Alpha aluminium, adjustable Fuel platform | OCLV process tuned for impacts |
| Reference bike | Marlin 4 to 7 | Fuel EX 5, 8 and 9 | Fuel EX 9.8 and 9.9 |
| What it means | Simple and affordable, no rear suspension | 4.95 kg frameset in M, tough and more affordable | 3.31 kg frameset in M, 1.64 kg less |
In short: the Di2 version weighs 16.88 kg in M, 260 g less than the mechanical Fuel EX 9 XT, with identical suspension and brakes. The aluminium frame remains 1.64 kg heavier than the carbon kit, but it gives you electronics without moving to carbon.
On a ride, electronics make you forget the drivetrain: one press on the shifter and the gear goes in, even mid-climb. You enjoy the scenery without thinking about adjustments, whether on the ridges of the Montagne Noire or in the valleys of the Haut-Languedoc.
The Juniper green blends into forest landscapes. The Fox Factory 36 GRIP X2 offers welcome comfort on long descents, and the XT brakes stay easy to modulate even after several hours in the saddle.
| Model | Frame | Fork / rear | Drivetrain | Weight (M) |
| Fuel EX 9 XT | Alpha NEXT Platinum alloy | Fox Factory 36, 150 / 145 mm | Shimano XT 1x12 | 17.14 kg |
| Fuel EX 9 XT Di2 | Alpha NEXT Platinum alloy | Fox Factory 36, 150 / 145 mm | Shimano XT Di2 1x12 | 16.88 kg |
| Fuel EX 9 X0 AXS | Alpha NEXT Platinum alloy | RockShox Lyrik Ultimate, 150 / 145 mm | SRAM X0 AXS T-Type 1x12 | not disclosed |
| Fuel EX 9.8 XT | OCLV Mountain carbon | Fox Factory 36, 150 / 145 mm | Shimano XT 1x12 | 15.28 kg |
Our take: for trail rides, comfort matters more than grams: the mechanical Eagle 90, 300 g lighter, does very well too. Prefer SRAM? The X0 AXS offers wireless shifting with RockShox Ultimate suspension.

LVR sizing advice If you are between two sizes, go for the smaller if your trails are slow and technical, the larger if you prioritise speed and stability. Post travel follows frame size; the S gets a 27.5-inch rear wheel to keep clearance.
