The Trek Fuel EX 9.8 Eagle 90 Gen 7 is the first Fuel EX with an OCLV Mountain carbon frame, suspended by a 150 mm RockShox Lyrik Ultimate fork and a 145 mm Super Deluxe Ultimate shock. Trek has not published its weight for this version; the 9.8 XT, which shares the same carbon frame, weighs 15.28 kg in size M. The Miami Green/Aloha Marble colourway blends a deep teal with light green marbling, a lagoon colour that stands out against the earth of the trails.

For the mountain biker who already rides an aluminium full-suspension bike and wants to make the move to carbon without paying for an electronic drivetrain they have no use for. Also ideal for anyone who prefers simple mechanics they can maintain themselves.
OCLV carbon, Trek's signature. For mountain biking, Trek adapts its OCLV process into a Mountain version: the fibre sheets are still heat-compacted under pressure to eliminate micro-voids, but the layup prioritises resistance to rock strikes and crashes over saving grams. On the Gen 7 Fuel EX, the carbon frame kit weighs 3.31 kg in size M, versus 4.95 kg for the Alpha NEXT Platinum aluminium version, and it is covered by Trek's lifetime warranty.
| OCLV Mountain (Fuel EX 9.8 / 9.9) | Alpha NEXT Platinum (Fuel EX 5 to 9) | Road OCLV (Madone, Domane) | |
| Level | Trek's mountain bike carbon | Trek's best MTB aluminium | Road carbon, OCLV 500 to 900 |
| Construction | Layup focused on impact resistance | Hydroformed tubes, dressed welds | Layup focused on lightness and stiffness |
| Fuel EX frameset (M) | 3.31 kg | 4.95 kg | not applicable |
| What it means | 1.64 kg lighter than aluminium, same geometry | Heavier, gentler on the budget | Not designed for MTB impacts |
In short: the 9.8 Eagle 90 is the entry point to the carbon Fuel EX, and it makes a clear-cut choice: the budget goes into the frame and the RockShox Ultimate suspension, the same as on the 9.9, while the drivetrain stays mechanical and simple. Trek does not publish its weight; the 9.8 XT, with the same frame, serves as a reference at 15.28 kg in M.
The choice of suspension is what sets this model apart: the Lyrik Ultimate and its Charger 3.1 RC cartridge are those of the 9.9, with a DebonAir+ spring that stays supple at the start of its travel and does not bottom out on steps. Under the chestnut trees of the Montagne Noire, it keeps the front wheel on the ground over roots.
The SRAM Eagle 90 T-Type drivetrain mounts directly on the frame's UDH hanger, with no conventional derailleur hanger, making it less vulnerable to knocks against rocks. Its 10-52 cassette offers a very low bottom gear with the 30-tooth chainring, enough to climb the steep tracks of the Caroux seated.
| Model | Frame | Travel rear / front | Drivetrain | Weight (M) |
| Fuel EX 9 Eagle 90 | Alpha NEXT Platinum alloy | 145 / 150 mm | SRAM Eagle 90 T-Type | 16.58 kg |
| Fuel EX 9.8 Eagle 90 | OCLV Mountain carbon | 145 / 150 mm | SRAM Eagle 90 T-Type | not published |
| Fuel EX 9.8 XT | OCLV Mountain carbon | 145 / 150 mm | Mechanical Shimano XT | 15.28 kg |
| Fuel EX 9.9 X0 AXS | OCLV Mountain carbon | 145 / 150 mm | Wireless SRAM X0 Eagle AXS | 14.08 kg |
Our take: with equivalent RockShox suspension, the 9.8 Eagle 90 keeps the carbon frame of the 9.9 X0 AXS (14.08 kg in M) but goes back to a mechanical drivetrain and aluminium wheels. Compared with the aluminium Fuel EX 9 Eagle 90 (16.58 kg), the gain comes from the frame.

LVR sizing advice If you are between two sizes, the smaller makes the Fuel EX more playful in tight switchbacks, the larger more stable at high speed in rock gardens. The dropper post goes from 150 to 200 mm of travel depending on size, and size S runs a mixed 29 / 27.5 set-up.

| Why no published weight? | Trek has not published it for this version; the 9.8 XT, with the same frame, weighs 15.28 kg in M. |
| Is Eagle 90 tough on rocks? | Yes, T-Type direct mounting on the UDH hanger does away with the fragile hanger of older derailleurs. |
| Can it be converted to wireless? | The UDH frame accepts it; we will look with you at the most suitable AXS drivetrain. |
| Does the Miami green fade in the sun? | No, it is a clear-coated paint; a protective film applied in the workshop protects it from rubbing. |

The LVR Cycles verdict The most rational carbon Fuel EX: the frame and suspension of a very high-end bike, with an easy-to-live-with mechanical drivetrain. The teal marbled with light green gives it a fresh, unusual look.
