Trek Fuel EX 9.8 XT Di2 Chameleon Green: wireless, Shimano style

The Trek Fuel EX 9.8 XT Di2 Gen 7 is the Shimano wireless option in the carbon Fuel EX range, alongside the SRAM-equipped 9.9 X0 AXS. It uses the OCLV Mountain frame, 145 / 150 mm Fox Factory suspension and four-piston XT brakes. Trek has not published a weight for this version; reference: the 9.8 XT, with the identical carbon frame, weighs 15.28 kg in size M. Gloss Chameleon Green/Matte Black pairs a shifting glossy green with matt black.

Who is it for?

For the mountain biker torn between the two wireless ecosystems who prefers the Shimano world, its shift feel and its XT brakes. It will suit riders who already own Shimano kit and want to keep the same habits.

The LVR workshop view

OCLV carbon, Trek's signature. OCLV refers to the moulding method Trek has applied to its fibres for more than thirty years: compaction under pressure and at high temperature that eliminates internal voids. Its Mountain version is designed for off-road riding, with a layup that prioritises strength against impacts. Combined with the Gen 7 Fuel EX, this carbon brings the frame kit down to 3.31 kg in M, 1.64 kg less than the aluminium version, with Trek's lifetime warranty.

In short: the 9.8 XT Di2 shares its frame, suspension, brakes and wheels with the 9.8 XT; only the derailleur changes, to wireless and electronic. Trek does not publish a weight for this version, so the 9.8 XT at 15.28 kg in M remains the most accurate reference.

The two wireless drivetrains each have their own logic: Shimano keeps a two-lever shifter close to the mechanical version, SRAM AXS uses a rocker paddle. The choice comes down to feel; in the shop, we let you try both shifters before deciding.

For brakes, the 9.8 XT Di2 sticks with mineral-oil Shimano XT M8220, with a 203 mm front rotor; the 9.9 X0 AXS uses SRAM Maven brakes, with their own pads and bleed kits. If you do your own maintenance, staying within one ecosystem simplifies your stock of parts.

Our take: the 9.8 XT Di2 and the 9.9 X0 AXS are the two wireless carbon Fuel EX models: Shimano and Fox on one side, SRAM, RockShox and carbon wheels on the other, for 14.08 kg in M. The aluminium Fuel EX 9 XT Di2 weighs 16.88 kg.

LVR sizing advice

If you are between two sizes, the smaller one suits you if you like to place the bike and jump, the larger one if you mainly ride fast and long. Dropper post travel follows size, and the S gets a 27.5-inch rear wheel.
