For the young rider or experienced shredder who alternates bike park days, downhill tracks and Sunday all-mountain rides, and wants a single tough bike. It will appeal to those who love jumping, carving berms and looking for little kickers along the edge of the trail.
Alpha NEXT Platinum aluminium, the pinnacle of Trek alloy. Trek grades its aluminium in three tiers: Alpha Silver on the Marlin, Alpha Platinum above it, and Alpha NEXT Platinum, reserved for the 7th generation of the Fuel. It is the latter that forms the base of the Fuel MX 9 Eagle 90. On the Fuel EX of the same generation, the alloy frameset weighs 4.95 kg in M, against 3.31 kg for the carbon version: the gap is real, but a well-made alloy frame takes rocks and crashes without leaving you worrying about the slightest invisible crack.
| Alpha NEXT Platinum (Fuel 9) | OCLV Mountain (Fuel 9.8 / 9.9) | Alpha Platinum (Slash 8) | |
| Level | Trek's best aluminium | Trek's mountain bike carbon | High-end alloy, one step below NEXT |
| Designed to | Take knocks at a sensible cost | Save weight, resist impacts | Aluminium enduro frames |
| Gen 7 Fuel EX frameset (M) | 4.95 kg | 3.31 kg | not applicable |
| What it means | Heavier, but unbothered by small knocks | 1.64 kg less on the frameset | Previous aluminium generation |
Put simply: with the same drivetrain, this alloy Fuel MX amounts to a complete bike capable of the same descents as the carbon 9.8. The extra grams are felt mainly on long climbs; on descents, the stability of a slightly heavier frame is no bad thing.
At the bike park, it is the landings that wear a bike out. The Vivid Ultimate keeps its behaviour over repeated descents, and the frame's adjustable progression lets you firm up the end of the stroke to absorb big jumps. We recommend checking the sag after the first sessions, once the seals have bedded in.
Maxxis EXO+ tyres offer a reinforced casing against pinch flats, useful on the region's rocks; converting to tubeless with sealant is the first thing we recommend. The Maven Bronze brakes, with a 200 mm rotor, go the distance on a bike park run ridden several times over.
| Model | Frame | Travel rear / front | Drivetrain | Weight (M) |
| Fuel EX 9 Eagle 90 | Alpha NEXT Platinum alloy | 145 / 150 mm | SRAM Eagle 90 1x12 | 16.58 kg |
| Fuel MX 9 Eagle 90 (Fox) | Alpha NEXT Platinum alloy | 150 / 160 mm | SRAM Eagle 90 1x12 | 16.78 kg |
| Fuel MX 9 XT | Alpha NEXT Platinum alloy | 150 / 160 mm | Shimano XT 1x12 | 16.91 kg |
| Fuel LX 9 Eagle 90 | Alpha NEXT Platinum alloy | 160 / 170 mm | SRAM Eagle 90 1x12 | 17.38 kg |
Our take: this RockShox MX 9 Eagle 90 weighs 600 g less than the Fuel LX 9 Eagle 90 claimed at 17.38 kg, for 10 mm less at the rear. If pedalling back up is part of your day, this is the right compromise.

LVR sizing advice Hesitating between two sizes: the smaller one makes the bike playful in tight corners, the larger one makes it more composed at high speed. Dropper post travel increases with size, from 150 to 200 mm.

| Tough enough for the bike park? | Yes, with suitable settings; for almost exclusively bike park riding, the Fuel LX remains the better choice. |
| Should I go tubeless? | We recommend it: the rims and tyres are designed for it, and we do the set-up. |
| Can I firm up the suspension? | Yes, through the air pressure and the frame's adjustable progression. |
| Does the matte red age well? | Yes, as long as you wash it without polishing products so it does not turn shiny. |

The LVR Cycles verdict The most aggressive Fuel MX 9 Eagle 90, ready to link descent sessions and then pedal back up the ridges. Its coppery brick red catches the eye in the bike park car park.
