Also designed for smaller riders, women or experienced teenagers, who struggle to find a proper enduro bike in their size. The size S gets a 150 mm dropper post, suited to a shorter leg.
The Fuel frame in its top-end alloy version. Alpha NEXT Platinum sits at the top of Trek's mountain bike alloy hierarchy, ahead of the Alpha Platinum of the Slash 8 and the Alpha Silver of the Marlin. For a bike exposed to repeated impacts, it is a logical choice. It gets most of the carbon frame's features: progression adjustment, interchangeable rocker link and lower shock mount, ABP pivot, down tube protection and transport protection for bike racks.
| Alpha NEXT Platinum (Fuel LX 9) | OCLV Mountain (Fuel LX 9.8) | Alpha Platinum (Slash 8) | |
| Level | Trek's best MTB aluminium, reserved for Gen 7 Fuels | Trek's mountain bike carbon | Aluminium from the range above |
| Construction | Alloy engineered for strength, highly adjustable frame | OCLV layup tuned for impact resistance | Tough alloy, simpler kinematics |
| Reference bike | Gen 7 alloy Fuel EX frameset: 4.95 kg (M) | Gen 7 carbon Fuel EX frameset: 3.31 kg (M) | Complete Slash 8: 16.68 kg (M) |
| What it means | Takes knocks, more affordable | About 1.6 kg less on the frameset | 170 mm alloy enduro, less adjustable |
Put simply: aluminium remains the most rational material here for a rider who rides hard and often. It adds weight, around 1.6 kg on the frameset according to Trek, but it takes a season of rough trails without flinching.
On a small frame, every detail matters. Trek fits a 150 mm dropper post in S, compared with 170 mm in M and 200 mm in L and XL, so that the saddle drops right down without getting in the way of the leg. Trek data also mentions 165 mm cranks, better suited to smaller riders; we check the length fitted for each size.
For a light rider, suspension set-up is essential: a DHX2 spring that is too stiff makes the rear end dead. We choose the right spring rate for your weight and set the Fox 38 pressure accordingly. That is where the bike becomes truly effective.
| Model | Frame | Drivetrain | Travel rear / front | Weight (M) |
| Fuel LX 9 XT | Alpha NEXT Platinum alloy | Mechanical Shimano XT | 160 / 170 mm | 17.79 kg |

| Fuel LX 9.8 XT Di2 | OCLV Mountain carbon | Wireless Shimano XT Di2 | 160 / 170 mm | 15.97 kg |
Our take: the LX 9 XT comes in a wireless Di2 version, weight not published. The Slash 8 drops to 16.68 kg but comes with 170 mm at the rear; the carbon LX 9.8 XT Di2 weighs 15.97 kg in M.
