Made for the mountain biker who does not put the bike away in winter and rides in rain, mud and cold. It will appeal to riders who want a reliable drivetrain in all conditions without spending their time adjusting it.
Alpha NEXT Platinum, the choice of toughness. The Fuel LX 9 XT Di2 shares its aluminium frame with the other Fuel LX 9 models: Trek's highest grade of mountain bike alloy, with progression adjustment and interchangeable kinematic parts. Pairing this frame with an electronic Di2 drivetrain is a bet on reliability: a frame that does not fear impacts, and a derailleur that stays in adjustment ride after ride.
| Alpha NEXT Platinum (Fuel LX 9) | OCLV Mountain (Fuel LX 9.8) | Alpha Platinum (Slash 8) | |
| Level | Trek's best MTB aluminium, reserved for Gen 7 Fuels | Trek's mountain bike carbon | Aluminium from the range above |
| Construction | Alloy engineered for strength, highly adjustable frame | OCLV layup tuned for impact resistance | Tough alloy, simpler kinematics |
| Reference bike | Gen 7 alloy Fuel EX frameset: 4.95 kg (M) | Gen 7 carbon Fuel EX frameset: 3.31 kg (M) | Complete Slash 8: 16.68 kg (M) |
| What it means | Takes knocks, more affordable | About 1.6 kg less on the frameset | 170 mm alloy enduro, less adjustable |
Put simply: you get Shimano electronics without moving to carbon. Trek does not give the weight of this version; the mechanical Fuel LX 9 XT, on the same frame, weighs 17.79 kg in M.
In winter, the cable drivetrain is often the first casualty: mud gets into the housing and slows the derailleur. With Di2, there is no such problem: the shifter sends the command wirelessly and the derailleur shifts to the requested gear. All that is left is to clean the chain and cassette after each ride.
Cold slightly reduces battery life: remember to charge before a long winter ride. The Maxxis Assegai and Minion DHR II tyres offer good grip on greasy ground; a slightly lower pressure improves traction further.
| Model | Frame | Drivetrain | Travel rear / front | Weight (M) |
| Fuel LX 9 XT | Alpha NEXT Platinum alloy | Mechanical Shimano XT | 160 / 170 mm | 17.79 kg |
| Fuel LX 9 XT Di2 | Alpha NEXT Platinum alloy | Wireless Shimano XT Di2 | 160 / 170 mm | n/a (reference 17.79 kg) |
| Fuel LX 9.8 XT Di2 | OCLV Mountain carbon | Wireless Shimano XT Di2 | 160 / 170 mm | 15.97 kg |
| Slash 9.8 XT Di2 | OCLV Mountain carbon | Wireless Shimano XT Di2 | 170 / 170 mm | 16.63 kg |
Our take: for winter, the LX 9 XT Di2 avoids the cable hassles of the mechanical LX 9 XT. The carbon LX 9.8 XT Di2 weighs 15.97 kg in M with the same drivetrain.
