At a glance

For the mountain biker who heads out for the day on the big loops of the Haut-Languedoc, and wants a drivetrain that stays precise from the first kilometre to the last. It will suit those who prefer to carry their repair kit in the frame.
The frame: Alpha NEXT Platinum, Trek's cutting-edge alloy. Above the Alpha Silver of the Marlin and Alpha Platinum, Alpha NEXT Platinum is reserved for the Gen 7 Fuel. No weight is published for this Di2 version; for scale, Trek gives 4.95 kg for the alloy Gen 7 Fuel EX frameset and 3.31 kg for its carbon equivalent.
| Alpha NEXT Platinum (Fuel 9) | OCLV Mountain (Fuel 9.8 / 9.9) | Alpha Platinum (Slash 8) | |
| Level | Trek's best aluminium | Trek's mountain bike carbon | High-end alloy, one step below NEXT |
| Designed to | Take knocks at a sensible cost | Save weight, resist impacts | Aluminium enduro frames |
| Gen 7 Fuel EX frameset (M) | 4.95 kg | 3.31 kg | not applicable |
| What it means | Heavier, but unbothered by small knocks | 1.64 kg less on the frameset | Previous aluminium generation |
Put simply: for big days out, the reliability of an alloy frame and the precision of Di2 make a reassuring duo.
On a long ride, the consistent precision of Di2 avoids the fatigue that comes with imprecise shifting. Just remember to check the charge before heading out: a full battery is more than enough for a big day.
The integrated storage lets you carry an inner tube and tools without a backpack. The down tube protection and the EXO+ casing of the Maxxis tyres protect the bike from flying stones on the tracks of the Espinouse.
| Model | Frame | Travel rear / front | Drivetrain | Weight (M) |
| Fuel EX 9 XT Di2 | Alpha NEXT Platinum alloy | 145 / 150 mm | Shimano XT Di2 1x12 | 16.88 kg |
| Fuel MX 9 XT | Alpha NEXT Platinum alloy | 150 / 160 mm | Shimano XT 1x12 | 16.91 kg |
| Fuel MX 9 XT Di2 | Alpha NEXT Platinum alloy | 150 / 160 mm | Shimano XT Di2 1x12 | not published |
| Fuel LX 9 XT | Alpha NEXT Platinum alloy | 160 / 170 mm | Shimano XT 1x12 | 17.79 kg |
Our take: for long rides, the MX 9 XT Di2 combines precision with margin on the descents; the Fuel EX 9 XT Di2 (16.88 kg) has less travel. The MX 9 XT (16.91 kg) remains the mechanical option.

LVR sizing advice If you are on the borderline between two sizes, the shorter one favours agility on twisty trails, the longer one composure on fast descents. Cranks of 165 or 170 mm and a dropper with 150 to 200 mm of travel depending on size.
