Trek Fuel LX 9.8 XT Miami Green: the carbon enduro bike for your first races

The Trek Fuel LX 9.8 XT Gen 7 is the enduro version of the Fuel in OCLV Mountain carbon: 160 mm of rear travel with a Fox DHX2 coil shock, a 170 mm Fox Factory 38 fork and a mechanical Shimano XT 1x12 drivetrain. Trek has not published a weight for this version; the closest reference is the Fuel LX 9.8 XT Di2, same carbon frame, at 15.97 kg in a size M. Its Miami Green/Aloha Marble finish pairs a Miami green leaning towards teal with a light green marbling.

Who is it for?

For the mountain biker getting into regional enduro races who wants a bike ready for timed stages straight out of the workshop, with no electronics to manage. It also suits the committed trail rider who finds their current bike outclassed on steep, rough descents.

The LVR workshop view

OCLV carbon, Trek's signature. On an enduro mountain bike, carbon is not just about saving weight: the OCLV Mountain version is laid up to withstand rock strikes and botched landings, with Trek's lifetime warranty on the frame. On the Gen 7 Fuel platform, Trek claims a frameset of 3.31 kg in carbon versus 4.95 kg in aluminium (measured on the Fuel EX in a size M).

Put simply: with an identical drivetrain, the Fuel LX 9.8 XT takes the components of the alloy Fuel LX 9 XT and swaps the frame for carbon. Trek does not publish its weight, but the frameset difference measured on the platform (over 1.6 kg) gives an idea of the gain to expect on the climbs.

In racing, reliability comes first: the cable-actuated XT drivetrain can be adjusted trailside with a simple key, with no battery to monitor between stages. The 30-tooth chainring and 10-51 cassette give a gear of less than one wheel turn per pedal stroke, ideal for climbing the transfers to the starts around Lodève without draining your reserves.

The DHX2 coil shock stays glued to the ground through sequences of small ledges and roots, where an air spring gets harsher towards the end of a stage as it heats up. The Assegai tyre in MaxxGrip compound and the Minion DHR II in MaxxTerra, in EXO+ casing, make a popular pairing among enduro riders.

Which Fuel should you choose?

Our take: compared with the alloy Fuel LX 9 XT (17.79 kg), the 9.8 XT keeps the same drivetrain and moves to carbon. The 9.8 XT Di2 remains the published weight reference at 15.97 kg; the Slash 9.8 XT Di2 goes up to 170 mm at the rear for 16.63 kg.

LVR sizing advice

The Fuel LX is chosen first according to the rider's height: between two sizes, the smaller one makes the bike more playful in hairpins, the larger one more stable at high speed. Dropper post travel increases with size.
