Trek Fuel LX 9.9 X0 AXS Chameleon Green: the right balance between Fuel EX and Slash

The Trek Fuel LX 9.9 X0 AXS Gen 7 sits between the Fuel EX trail bike and the pure enduro Slash: OCLV Mountain carbon frame, 160 mm at the rear, 170 mm ZEB Ultimate, Bontrager Line Pro 30 wheels and SRAM X0 Eagle AXS T-Type. Trek has not published a weight for this version; for reference, the Fuel LX 9.8 XT Di2, which shares the same carbon frame, weighs 15.97 kg in a size M. Its Gloss Chameleon Green/Matte Black finish makes a glossy chameleon green shimmer against a matte black.

Who is it for?

For the mountain biker torn between a versatile trail bike and an enduro bike, who wants one bike for weekend rides as well as a few races a year. It suits riders who spend a lot of time descending but refuse a bike that is too sluggish on the climbs.

The LVR workshop view

OCLV carbon, Trek's signature. The Fuel LX 9.9 shares the OCLV Mountain frame of the 9.8: the same carbon designed to withstand the repeated impacts of descending, the same Trek lifetime warranty. The difference therefore lies in the spec. A useful reminder: on the Gen 7 Fuel platform, Trek measures 3.31 kg for the carbon frameset and 4.95 kg for the aluminium one (Fuel EX, size M).

What it meansThe most adjustable, zero control cablesSame frame, simplerHeavier, tough frame

Put simply: the 9.9 does not give you a lighter frame than the 9.8, it gives you RockShox Ultimate suspension with more adjustments, a drivetrain and dropper post with no control cables at all, and Line Pro 30 wheels. Trek does not publish its weight: the closest reference remains the Fuel LX 9.8 XT Di2.

The Bontrager Line Pro 30 wheels sit above the Line Comp 30 fitted to the Fuel LX 9.8 and 9: a plus for responsiveness when accelerating on a bike of this size. Their 30 mm internal-width rims support 2.5-inch tyres run at low pressure well.

Choosing between Fuel EX, Fuel LX and Slash comes down to where you set the slider: the Fuel EX 9.9 X0 AXS remains the liveliest with 145/150 mm, while the Slash 9.9 targets extreme slopes with 170 mm at the rear. The Fuel LX keeps the Fuel base, lighter and more playful, with enough travel for the region's enduro events.

Our take: the Fuel EX 9.9 X0 AXS weighs 14.08 kg with 145/150 mm, the Slash 9.9 X0 AXS T-Type 16.53 kg with 170/170 mm. The Fuel LX 9.9, with no published weight, sits between the two in travel; the 9.8 XT Di2 gives 15.97 kg in M.

LVR sizing advice

Between two sizes: the smaller one if you want a lively bike on tight trails, the larger one if you favour composure at high speed. The Fox Transfer NEO dropper goes from 150 to 200 mm of travel depending on size.

The LVR Cycles verdict

The high-end Fuel LX for riders who want a single bike, between aggressive trail and enduro, with no compromise on spec. Its glossy chameleon green on matte black changes appearance throughout the day.
