Trek Fuel MX 9.8 XT Miami Green: big mountain bike days in carbon

The Trek Fuel MX 9.8 XT Gen 7 combines an OCLV Mountain carbon frame with Fox Factory suspension of 150 mm at the rear and 160 mm up front, the Shimano XT M8200 1x12 drivetrain and a mixed 29 / 27.5-inch wheel set-up. Weight not published by Trek for this version; for comparison, count on 15.28 kg for a Fuel EX 9.8 XT and 15.97 kg for a Fuel LX 9.8 XT Di2 in a size M. Its Miami Green/Aloha Marble colourway pairs a teal with light green marbled swirls.

Who is it for?

For the mountain biker who heads out for whole days, alternates long climbs with technical descents, and does not want to choose between efficiency and safety. Ideal for the big loops of the Espinouse or day-long crossings of the massif.

The LVR workshop view

OCLV Mountain carbon, Trek's signature. Since 1992, Trek has been eliminating micro-voids from its frames by compacting the fibres under heat and pressure: this is the OCLV process. Its Mountain version, used on the Fuel MX 9.8 XT, prioritises impact resistance, essential on a bike that spends its rides in scree. The frame integrates storage, a threaded BSA bottom bracket and ISCG 05 mounts for a chain guide, under Trek's lifetime warranty.

What it meansAround 1.6 kg less on the frame, lifetime warrantyHeavier, gentler on the budget145 / 150 mm (EX) or 160 / 170 mm (LX)

Put simply: here, carbon is not about climbing faster by a few grams, it lightens the frame by around 1.6 kg compared with Fuel aluminium, making the bike easier to handle and carry. The 9.8 XT pairs this frame with Fox Factory suspension and a proven cable-actuated Shimano groupset.

The Shimano XT M8200 groupset works with a conventional derailleur cable: it can be fixed trailside with a simple multi-tool, and its parts are available in every workshop. The 10-51 cassette with the 30-tooth chainring offers a very low bail-out gear for the end of a long day, when your legs start to feel it.

The 4-piston Shimano XT M8220 brakes have a sharp bite and precise modulation. Paired with a 203 mm and a 180 mm rotor, they go the distance on the long descents from the Espinouse down to the Orb valley, provided the pads are checked regularly.

Which Fuel should you choose?

Our take: with 150/160 mm, this 9.8 XT has 5 mm more at the rear and 10 mm more up front than the Fuel EX 9.8 XT (145/150 mm, 15.28 kg in M). The MX 9.8 Eagle 90 goes up to 170 mm up front; the 9.8 XT Di2 keeps the same suspension with a wireless derailleur.

LVR sizing advice

If you are unsure, go for the smaller size for agility on technical trails, the larger for stability on fast descents. The Line Dropper goes from 150 mm (S) to 170 mm (M) then 200 mm.
