Four-piston SRAM DB8 brakes and a dropper post of up to 170 mm complete the spec. Its Nightshade colourway, a deep dark mauve, makes a pleasant change from the classic colours.

For the mountain biker who loves the light, lively feel of the Top Fuel but is descending faster and faster and wants a bit more margin at the front. It will also suit anyone torn between this and a Fuel EX who prioritises pedalling on long rides.
Alpha Platinum aluminium, in a more aggressive version. This evolution of the Top Fuel 8 keeps the Gen 4 aluminium frame (internal storage, four-position Mino Link, ABP) but moves to a 140 mm fork and a 185x55 mm shock, with a SRAM Eagle 70 T-Type drivetrain mounted on a direct-mount hanger.
| Alpha Platinum (this bike) | OCLV Mountain (Top Fuel 9.x) | Alpha Silver (Marlin) | |
| Level | Trek's high-end aluminium | Trek's mountain bike carbon | Entry-level aluminium |
| Construction | Hydroformed tubes, smoothed welds | OCLV layup reinforced against impacts | Simpler tubes, hardtails |
| Reference bike | Top Fuel 8 Eagle 70: 14.88 kg (M) | Top Fuel 9.8 XT Di2: 14.00 kg (M) | Marlin (hardtail) |

In short: 300 g more than the Shimano-equipped Top Fuel 8, but a longer fork and a T-Type drivetrain that is tougher against rocks. It is a Top Fuel that looks more towards the descents.
The T-Type Eagle 70 drivetrain mounts directly on the UDH hanger: the derailleur resists impacts better and shifts go through cleanly under load, even mid-climb. The 10-52 cassette offers a very low gear for the ramps of the Espinouse.
The Bontrager Rapid Drive 108 hubs engage quickly when you pedal, useful for accelerating between two rocks or clearing a step on a climb. The Line TLR 30 rims are tubeless-ready, and we set them up in the workshop with sealant so you can ride through brambles with peace of mind.
| Model | Frame | Travel rear / front | Drivetrain | Weight (M) |
| Top Fuel 8 | Alpha Platinum alloy | 120 / 130 mm | Shimano SLX/XT 1x12 | 14.58 kg |
| Top Fuel 8 Eagle 70 | Alpha Platinum alloy | 130 / 140 mm | SRAM Eagle 70 T-Type 1x12 | 14.88 kg |
| Top Fuel 9.8 XT Di2 | OCLV Mountain carbon | 120 / 130 mm | Shimano XT Di2 1x12 | 14.00 kg |
| Fuel EX 8 (Gen 7) | Alpha NEXT Platinum alloy | 145 / 150 mm | Shimano 1x12 | 16.58 kg |
Our take: 300 g more than the Shimano-equipped Top Fuel 8, for a longer fork and a T-Type drivetrain. The Gen 7 Fuel EX 8 goes further on descents (145 / 150 mm) but weighs 16.58 kg.
