Trek Fuel MX 9.8 XT Di2 Dark Carmine: less adjusting, more trails

The Trek Fuel MX 9.8 XT Di2 Gen 7 combines an OCLV Mountain carbon frame, 150 mm of rear travel, a 160 mm Fox Factory 36 fork and a wireless Shimano XT Di2 1x12 drivetrain. Weight not published by Trek for this version; the two most telling Trek references are the Fuel EX 9.8 XT at 15.28 kg and the Fuel LX 9.8 XT Di2 at 15.97 kg in a size M. The Gloss Dark Carmine/Matte Trek Black finish pairs a glossy dark carmine red with a matte black.

Who is it for?

For the mountain biker with a busy schedule, who rides when they can and wants a bike ready for every ride, with no derailleur to adjust. They often transport their bike by car to reach the riding spots and appreciate kit that copes with these journeys.

The LVR workshop view

OCLV Mountain carbon, Trek's signature. OCLV carbon comes from compacting the fibre layers to eliminate internal air bubbles, the weak points of a frame. For its mountain bikes, Trek uses the OCLV Mountain variant, whose layup is calibrated to withstand rocks and jumps. The Fuel MX 9.8 XT Di2 benefits from it with guided internal cable routing, even cleaner with a wireless derailleur, and Trek's lifetime warranty on the frame.

Put simply: the frame and suspension are those of the 9.8 XT. The difference lies in the wireless XT Di2 M8250 derailleur with programmable shifting: a gain in everyday convenience and an adjustment that no longer drifts, not more advanced suspension.

A cable derailleur goes out of adjustment over time, with knocks and transport. The wireless XT Di2 is free of this problem: once the indexing is set, it stays put. Just recharge the battery regularly, like a GPS computer, to get the same precision on every ride.

The frame has transport protection that prevents marks when the bike travels on a bike rack or a pick-up tailgate. The cables run through guided internal channels, which limits noise and makes workshop jobs easier, from replacing a brake hose to servicing the dropper post.

Which Fuel should you choose?

Our take: this 9.8 XT Di2 differs from the 9.8 XT only in its wireless derailleur, with identical frame and suspension. The 9.9 X0 AXS adds carbon wheels and handlebar; the closest wireless weight reference remains the Fuel LX 9.8 XT Di2, 15.97 kg in M.

LVR sizing advice

Torn between two sizes: the shorter one for a lively bike that is easy to place, the longer one if you mainly ride fast on steep slopes. Here, only the dropper post travel varies from one size to another.
