The Garmin Edge 840 Solar is a mid-size GPS cycle computer that has a touchscreen and buttons on the right and left sides. Its external design is similar to that of the Edge 540, with the same number of buttons, allowing a reduction in production costs thanks to a common shell for both devices. The series is slightly larger than the previous one, increasing from 50mm to 57.8mm in width and from 20mm to 19.6mm in thickness, with a length of 85.1mm, an increase of 3mm.

The Garmin Edge 840 Solar offers five charging pins on the mounting element and a fast charging USB-C port. In normal use, the battery has an autonomy of 26 to 32 hours, 42 to 60 hours in economy mode and a saving of 25 minutes per hour of exposure to the sun thanks to its solar energy sensors arranged around the screen . It also has the improved "Climb Pro" feature which predicts the percentage of a slope without following a course, as well as Stamina to consult information on the level of energy remaining while driving. The GPS chip is identical to that of the Edge 1040.

The Solar version of the Edge 840 has more memory than the Edge 540 Solar version, with 32 GB compared to 16 GB. In terms of features, the Edge 840 is similar to the Edge 1040, which makes it one the most complete GPS counters on the market at a more attractive price than its big brother.
