The third-generation Trek Marlin 5 is a step up from the Marlin 4: a Shimano CUES 1x9 drivetrain with an 11-46 LINKGLIDE cassette, a 100 mm SR Suntour XCT 30 fork with hydraulic lockout and 2.40-inch Bontrager Montrose Comp tyres, on an Alpha Silver aluminium frame. Trek quotes 15.10 kg in size M. Its Mulsanne Blue is a deep, glossy blue, classic and elegant.

For the beginner who already knows they will ride regularly and wants a slightly better-equipped bike, for the rider whose outings mix road and tracks, or for anyone getting ready for their first organised mountain bike rides in the region. It is still an excellent bike for weekday journeys.
Alpha aluminium, Trek's expertise. Under the Alpha name, Trek groups its aluminium alloys by level of finish. The Marlin 5 inherits Alpha Silver, built to last: thick tubes where impacts are concentrated, cables routed inside the frame so they do not rub, and routing already in place for a dropper seatpost. It is a frame that is happy to grow old with you.
| Alpha Silver (Marlin 5) | Alpha Gold (Roscoe 8) | Alpha Platinum (Farley 5) | |
| Level | Entry point to the aluminium MTB range | More aggressive trail hardtail | Lighter aluminium, fat bike use |
| Construction | Reinforced tubes, versatile geometry | Tapered head tube, Boost, ISCG 05 | Refined frame, plenty of mounts |
| Reference bike | Marlin 4 to 7 | Roscoe 8 | Farley 5 |
| What it means | Tough, versatile, easy to maintain | Takes a 140 mm fork | Takes 4.50-inch tyres |
In short: the Marlin 5 keeps the frame shared by the whole Marlin family and brings two real improvements over the Marlin 4: a ninth gear with a wider-range cassette, and a fork lockout, which is invaluable on the road. It weighs 200 g more than the Marlin 4 in size M, a difference you will not feel on the trail.
The Shimano CUES range replaces several older entry-level groupsets with more durable LINKGLIDE technology: the chain and cassette wear more slowly and shifts stay crisp under load. With the 32-tooth chainring and 11-46 cassette, the range is wide enough to tackle track climbs and head home by road.
The hydraulic fork lockout works with a single flick: locked on tarmac sections to save energy, open as soon as the track gets rough. In the workshop we set the spring preload to your weight so the fork works properly. This deep blue remains one of the most timeless colours in the range.
| Model | Fork | Drivetrain | Wheels / tyres | Weight (M) |
| Marlin 4 | Suntour XCE 28, 100 mm | Shimano ESSA 1x8 | 29 x 2.40 in (inner tube) | 14.90 kg |
| Marlin 5 | Suntour XCT 30, 100 mm, lockout | Shimano CUES 1x9 | 29 x 2.40 in (inner tube) | 15.10 kg |
| Marlin 6 | RockShox Judy, 100 mm | Shimano CUES 1x10 + dropper post | Tubeless Ready rims | 15.00 kg |
| Marlin 7 | RockShox Judy Silver air, 100 mm | SRAM NX Eagle 1x12 + dropper post | Maxxis Rekon Tubeless Ready | 14.15 kg |
Our take: between the Marlin 4 and the Marlin 5, the difference comes down to the ninth gear and the fork lockout. If you are aiming for technical trails, the Marlin 6 or Marlin 7, with their dropper posts, will be more at home.

LVR sizing advice In XS and S, the Marlin 5 rolls on 27.5-inch wheels with a lowered top tube that is easier to step over; from size M it moves to 29-inch wheels. If you are between two sizes, choose the smaller one if you are new to trails.

| Why 9 speeds rather than 8? | The gaps between sprockets are more even and the 11-46 cassette has a wider range. |
| Can the fork be adjusted? | Yes, the preload can be set to your weight; we do it when we hand the bike over. |
| Is it suitable for an organised MTB ride? | Yes, on the short and medium routes of organised rides. |
| Does the gloss blue scratch? | Like any gloss paint; an adhesive frame protection film prevents it. |
|
The LVR Cycles verdict A well-conceived Marlin 5 that gains versatility from its fork lockout and durable CUES drivetrain. Its deep blue gives it a classic, polished look.
