Trek Wahoo 20 Path Marianas Blue: the light 20-inch bike that makes them want to pedal

The Trek Wahoo 20 Path is aimed at children from 1.14 to 1.32 m who already ride confidently and want to go further. At 8.75 kg in one size according to Trek, it is the lightest of the Wahoo bikes, yet it still has 8 microSHIFT gears and V-brakes. The Marianas Blue colour is a deep, almost navy blue, understated and easy to like.

Who is it for?

For the child moving on from their first single-speed bike and starting to follow their parents over longer distances: park paths, cycle lanes, quiet country lanes. It also suits families who want a bike light enough for their child to push or put away on their own.

The LVR workshop view

Alpha Silver aluminium, a grown-up frame in a 20-inch format. Trek keeps the Alpha name for its in-house alloys, and Silver is used on its entry-level bikes. On this Wahoo 20 Path, it makes for a stiff, light frame, so much so that the complete bike comes in at just 8.75 kg, the lowest figure in the whole Wahoo range.

In other words: for the same child height, this Path weighs 2.15 kg less than the 7-speed Precaliber 20. On a 20-inch bike, that difference is felt every time they pull away and every time the bike has to be lifted.

An 8-speed drivetrain on a 20-inch bike is a real step forward: the 11-38 cassette combined with the 28-tooth chainring offers a very easy gear for setting off uphill, and taller gears to keep up with mum and dad on the flat. The chain guard keeps grease off trousers and calves.

Weight matters enormously for a child: relative to their own body weight, every kilo of bike counts far more than it does for an adult. The 8.75 kg of this Wahoo makes pulling away, turning round and carrying the bike much easier.

Our take: for the same child height, the Wahoo 20 Path weighs 2.15 kg less than the 7-speed Precaliber 20 and adds one gear. The Precaliber keeps the advantage of a 35 mm suspension fork; the Wahoo 20 Trail adds disc brakes for 1.10 kg more.

Trek recommends this Wahoo 20 Path for a child measuring 1.14 to 1.32 m. Once seated, your child should be able to touch the ground with their toes and keep their arms slightly bent. The simplest way is still to come and try it with them in our Béziers shop.
