For the 6 to 8 year old who has moved past stabilisers and feels too big on their 16-inch. It also suits parents who want a bike whose saddle can be raised over several seasons.
Alpha Silver, this time on a real big-kid bike. The Alpha Silver aluminium frame of the Precaliber 20 Freewheel comes with a rigid steel fork, 20-inch wheels with 32 spokes and a ProWheel 127 mm chainset whose 32-tooth chainring has a double guard. A single gear and no derailleur cable: the bike stays simple to maintain and your child can concentrate on balance and braking.
| Precaliber 16 | Precaliber 20 Freewheel | Precaliber 20 7-speed | |
| Stage | The independence bike | Transition with no gears | First gears |
| Frame / fork | Alloy / steel | Alpha Silver alloy / steel | Alpha Silver alloy / 35 mm fork |
| Reference bike | 8.35 kg, 99 to 117 cm | 9.45 kg, 114 to 132 cm | 10.90 kg, 114 to 132 cm |
| What it means | Stabilisers possible | Lighter, nothing to adjust | More versatile, heavier |
In other words: 9.45 kg, a single freewheel gear, two V-brakes on the handlebar and a kickstand fitted as standard. Trek presents it as the transition model after the stabiliser bike, for 6 to 8 year olds.
Moving from 16 to 20 inches changes the position: the wider 560 mm handlebar and 40 mm rise place your child slightly further forward, with more control. The 127 mm cranks match the length of their legs, for smooth, efficient pedalling.
As your child grows, the saddle can be raised up to the mark on the seatpost. Drop into the workshop when your child is pedalling with their knees too bent: an adjustment of a few centimetres is often enough to make them comfortable again for family rides on the greenways.
| Model | Wheels | Child's height | Gears / brakes | Weight |
| Precaliber 16 | 16 in | 99 to 117 cm | 1 speed, 2 V-brakes | 8.35 kg |
| Precaliber 20 Freewheel | 20 in | 114 to 132 cm | 1 speed, 2 V-brakes | 9.45 kg |
| Precaliber 20 7-speed | 20 in | 114 to 132 cm | 7 speeds, 2 V-brakes, 35 mm fork | 10.90 kg |
| Wahoo 20 Path | 20 in | 114 to 132 cm | 8-speed microSHIFT, 2 V-brakes | 8.75 kg |
Our take: at 9.45 kg, the Freewheel sits between the Precaliber 16 (8.35 kg) and the Precaliber 20 7-speed (10.90 kg). For a child who is just starting to ride alone, it is the easiest to get to grips with.
