For the commuter who rides to work in smart trousers and never wants a grease mark on their calf again. It's for anyone who prefers a bike that just works, day after day, without a second thought.
Belt and internal gear hub: clean mechanics. This Charter+ 4 Lowstep replaces the chain and derailleur with a Gates CDX belt and a Shimano Nexus 5-speed hub. The gears work protected inside the hub shell, and the belt needs neither oil nor grease. The bolt-on adjustable rear dropout on the Alpha Platinum frame is used here to set the belt tension.
| Shimano CUES derailleur | Nexus 5 hub + belt | Enviolo hub + belt | |
| How it works | 9 sprockets and a Linkglide chain | 5 gears enclosed in the hub | Continuously variable, no steps |
| Maintenance | Chain needs cleaning and lubing | Grease-free belt, sealed hub | Grease-free belt, sealed hub |
| Reference bike | Charter+ 4 R9, 30.80 kg (M, 540 Wh) | Charter+ 4 Nexus 5, 30.60 kg (M, 540 Wh) | Charter+ 4 Enviolo, 31.60 kg (M, 540 Wh) |
| What it means | Widest gear range | Shifts at a standstill, clean | The ideal gear at any moment |
In short: the Charter+ 4 Nexus 5 540 Wh Lowstep puts peace of mind ahead of gear range. At 30.60 kg in size M according to Trek, it even weighs slightly less than the derailleur-equipped R9 version.
A carbon-reinforced belt needs no lubrication, doesn't rust and makes almost no noise. It won't dirty your clothes or your hands when you handle the bike, and it outlasts a conventional chain in urban use. A simple rinse with water is all the maintenance it needs.
The Nexus hub encloses its 5 gears in a sealed shell, protected from rain and dust. The Bosch assistance, which stops at 25 km/h, makes up for a narrower gear range than a derailleur: on urban journeys around Béziers, five speeds are plenty.
| Model | Motor / battery | Drivetrain | Fork | Weight (size) |
| Charter+ 4 Nexus 5 belt 540 Wh Lowstep | Bosch Performance Line 75 Nm / 540 Wh | Nexus 5 + belt | 63 mm coil | 30.60 kg (M) |
| Charter+ 4 Nexus 5 belt 800 Wh Lowstep | Bosch Performance Line 75 Nm / 800 Wh | Nexus 5 + belt | 63 mm coil | 31.50 kg (M) |
| Charter+ 4 Enviolo belt 540 Wh Lowstep | Bosch Performance Line 75 Nm / 540 Wh | Enviolo City + belt | 63 mm coil | 31.60 kg (M) |
| Charter+ 4 R9 540 Wh Lowstep | Bosch Performance Line 75 Nm / 540 Wh | Shimano CUES 9-speed | 63 mm coil | 30.80 kg (M) |
Our take: at 30.60 kg in M, this Nexus 5 540 Wh weighs 0.20 kg less than the derailleur-equipped R9 540 Wh. The Charter+ 4 Enviolo 540 Wh Lowstep (31.60 kg) replaces the 5 gears with continuously variable gearing.

LVR sizing advice You get onto the Lowstep frame from the front, without lifting your leg: the size is chosen mainly on saddle height and reach. Trek's ranges overlap between M and L (170 to 173 cm); in that case, the smaller size gives a more upright position and the larger one more room for long rides. The height-adjustable stem then fine-tunes the position.

| Can the belt break? | It's very tough; the main thing is to avoid bending or twisting it when handling it. |
| Can I change gear when stationary? | Yes, that's the advantage of an internal gear hub, handy at red lights. |
| Does the belt tension need adjusting? | It's adjusted in the workshop using the frame's adjustable rear dropout. |
| Is the blue dark? | Yes, Covellite Blue is a deep indigo blue. |
|
The LVR Cycles verdict A clean, quiet Charter+ for everyday use, with no grease and no derailleur adjustment. Its deep indigo blue gives it a polished look.
