Who is it for?

For the tall rider who commutes by bike and prefers a classic frame to swing a leg over, without the upkeep of a chain. It will also suit those who mostly ride alone and appreciate a bike that feels solid and consistent.

The LVR workshop view

Belt drive on a classic frame. For riders who prefer to swing a leg over a top tube, Trek offers the Charter+ 4 Nexus 5 with a standard Alpha Platinum frame, from M to XL. The Gates CDX belt, Nexus 5-speed hub and 540 Wh battery are carried over unchanged, as are the mudguards, the integrated rack and the Pletscher kickstand.

In short: an easy-going Charter+ for riders of 165 cm and up, weighed by Trek at 31.60 kg in size L. The belt keeps grease marks off your trousers, a real plus for commuting in everyday clothes.

With a standard frame, the seatpost sticks out less for the same rider height, and the bike looks more compact under a bigger rider. The belt drive is identical to the Lowstep version: no grease, no rust, hardly any noise.

The 75 Nm Bosch motor supports you when pulling away up to 25 km/h, then leaves you to pedal. The Shimano MT200 hydraulic brakes and their 180 mm rotors give consistent braking even in the rain, while the mudguards also protect the belt from spray.

Our take: this standard-frame Nexus 5 540 Wh weighs 31.60 kg in L, compared with 32.50 kg for the 800 Wh version. If you prefer a derailleur and a wide bar for the tracks, the standard-frame Trail 540 Wh is quoted at 26.80 kg in L.
