Trek Domane AL 2 in size 49: a proper road bike for smaller riders

The Trek Domane AL 2 Gen 4 combines an Alpha Series 100 aluminium frame, a carbon fork, a Shimano Claris 2x8 groupset and Tektro mechanical disc brakes, for 10.55 kg in size 56. This version is now only available in size 49, which is good news for riders from 156 to 163 cm who often struggle to find a well-proportioned road bike. Its Crimson to Dark Carmine Fade paintwork shifts from a bright crimson to a deep carmine, and looks superb in the sunshine.

Who is it for?

For a smaller rider who is new to the road, a tall teenager joining a cycling club's youth section, or someone getting back on a bike who wants a reliable machine without overspending. The position stays upright, the disc brakes inspire confidence on descents, and the frame mounts open the door to everyday riding too.

The LVR workshop view

Alpha aluminium, Trek's expertise. This version of the Domane AL 2 shares the same Alpha Series 100 aluminium frame and the same full-carbon Domane AL fork with the new one. What Trek has changed since is mainly the wheels and tyres: wider Paradigm 23 rims and Kwaremont tyres on the new bike, 21 mm Paradigm SL rims and Bontrager R1 tyres on this one. The frame therefore keeps its strengths: mudguard mounts, internal cable routing and a universal derailleur hanger.

In other words: Alpha 100 isn't chasing a weight record, it is built to last and to take anything in its stride. To save weight you need to step up to the Alpha 300 of the Émonda ALR or to carbon, with a different budget and a different use.

On a 49 frame, proportions matter as much as the brand: a 38 cm bar, an 80 mm stem and a tapered head tube give precise steering here without forcing you to stretch out. The 32 mm Bontrager R1 tyres with their Hard-Case Lite layer are very forgiving on gravelly verges, and the Paradigm SL rims can be converted to tubeless, which we do in the workshop.

The 50/34 chainset paired with the 11-32 cassette is enough for the climbs around Béziers and the rolling roads near Saint-Chinian; for the steep ramps of the Caroux, plan on spinning up gently. On the maintenance side, the cable-operated Tektro callipers are adjusted as the pads wear: we check them at the first service.

Our take: this version and the new one share the frame and groupset; the latter saves 200 g thanks to its wheels and tyres. For 450 g less and 11 speeds, look at the Domane AL 4, available from size 44 to 61.
