With its Lava finish, a deep, luminous lava red, the Gen 6 Trek Fuel EX 9.9 X0 AXS T-Type makes its ambitions clear: OCLV Mountain carbon frame, Fox Factory suspension and SRAM Maven Silver brakes, weighing 14.78 kg in size M. The size S version offered here rolls on 27.5-inch wheels, with 140 mm of travel at both ends according to Trek's spec. SRAM X0 AXS wireless shifting and the Reverb AXS post leave the handlebar completely clean.

For the smaller rider looking for a lively, precise bike on descents, able to keep up with a taller group on technical trails. It will also suit the fast-progressing young mountain biker who wants a high-level bike in their size.
OCLV Mountain carbon, the all-electronic version. This Fuel EX 9.9 pairs the Gen 6 OCLV Mountain carbon frame with SRAM's wireless ecosystem: an X0 AXS T-Type rear derailleur mounted directly on the UDH hanger and a radio-controlled Reverb AXS post. The mountain bike carbon layup is designed to resist rock strikes, and the frame keeps its storage hatch and adjustable head angle headset. Trek lifetime warranty on the frame.
| OCLV Mountain | Alpha Platinum (Gen 6) | Alpha NEXT Platinum (Gen 7) | |
| Level | Trek's mountain bike carbon | High-end aluminium | Trek's most refined aluminium |
| Construction | OCLV layup reinforced against impacts | Hydroformed tubes, smoothed welds | Refined tube shapes |
| Reference bike | Gen 7 Fuel EX frameset: 3.31 kg (M) | Gen 6 Fuel EX 5 / 8 | Gen 7 Fuel EX frameset: 4.95 kg (M) |
| What it means | About 1.6 kg less on the frameset | Proven, robust base | Alloy version of the new generation |
Put simply: this build is not the lightest (14.78 kg versus 13.98 kg for the XTR version), but it is the most modern: no more derailleur or dropper cables to adjust, and Maven brakes built for long descents.
The Fox Factory 36 GRIP X2 fork has a damper with separate adjustments, from the same family as on top enduro bikes. On a 140 mm trail bike, this lets you keep the fork riding high through steps while making it very supple over roots; we offer a base set-up and then a second appointment after a few rides.
The frame has a storage hatch in the down tube: inner tube, tool and tubeless plugs travel without a backpack. The Mino Link and adjustable head angle headset let you adapt the geometry to the steep trails of the Espinouse or the more flowing loops around the Salagou.
| Model | Frame | Travel rear / front | Drivetrain | Weight (M) |
| Fuel EX 8 GX AXS (Gen 6) | Alpha Platinum alloy | 140 / 150 mm | SRAM GX AXS T-Type 1x12 | 15.88 kg |
| Fuel EX 9.9 X0 AXS (Gen 6) | OCLV Mountain carbon | 140 / 140 mm (size S page) | SRAM X0 AXS T-Type 1x12 | 14.78 kg |
| Fuel EX 9.9 XTR (Gen 6) | OCLV Mountain carbon | 140 / 150 mm | Shimano XTR 1x12 | 13.98 kg |
| Fuel EX 9.8 XT (Gen 7) | OCLV Mountain carbon | 145 / 150 mm | Shimano XT 1x12 | 15.28 kg |
Our take: with the same carbon frame, the 9.9 XTR drops to 13.98 kg; this 9.9 X0 AXS puts ease of use first with its electronics. The Gen 7 Fuel EX 9.8 XT weighs 15.28 kg, 500 g more.

| Enough travel for enduro? | For occasional enduro, yes; for racing, look instead at the Slash and its 170 mm. |
| Suspension set-up? | We set the sag, rebound and compression to your weight in the workshop before the first ride. |
| Is the Lava red glossy? | It is an intense lava red; gentle cleaning is enough to keep it bright. |
| Can it be converted to 29-inch? | Trek designed the S frame for 27.5; we advise against changing wheel sizes. |

The LVR Cycles verdict A wireless carbon Fuel EX, high-end and proportioned for smaller riders, with top-level suspension. Its Lava red gives it character without overdoing it.
