At a glance

This Fuel LX is aimed at the rider who splits their days between the bike park and enduro rides, and wants a lively carbon bike that is agile in berms and on jumps. It will also appeal to those looking for a playful bike on the descents.
OCLV Mountain carbon, Trek's mountain bike signature. OCLV is Trek's carbon process; its Mountain version is tuned for impact resistance rather than weight saving alone. The Fuel LX 9.8 benefits with a frame lighter than the Alpha NEXT Platinum alloy of the LX 9, the same adjustable kinematics, a UDH hanger and Trek's lifetime warranty on the frame.
| OCLV Mountain (Fuel LX 9.8) | Alpha NEXT Platinum (Fuel LX 9) | OCLV Mountain (Slash 9.8) | |
| Level | Trek's mountain bike carbon, lifetime warranty | Trek's best mountain bike aluminium | Same carbon, more aggressive bike |
| Construction | OCLV layup tuned to absorb impacts | Alloy engineered for strength | OCLV layup, 170 mm at the rear |
| Reference bike | Gen 7 carbon Fuel EX frameset: 3.31 kg (M) | Gen 7 alloy Fuel EX frameset: 4.95 kg (M) | Slash 9.8 XT Di2: 16.63 kg (M) |
| What it means | About 1.6 kg less on the frameset | Heavier, more affordable | More travel, less versatile |
Put simply: the 9.8 Eagle 90 is the most direct way to get a carbon Fuel LX. The drivetrain stays mechanical and robust; the weight is not published, but the 9.8 XT Di2 on the same frame weighs 15.97 kg in M.
At the bike park, a lighter bike is easier to handle in the air and through linked berms. OCLV Mountain carbon, tuned for impacts, takes the landings. The down tube protection and transport protection prevent marks on chairlifts or during shuttles.
The four-piston SRAM Maven Bronze brakes deliver high power for moderate lever effort, which limits forearm fatigue run after run. After a day on the tracks, check the pads, axles and tyre pressures.
| Model | Frame | Drivetrain | Travel rear / front | Weight (M) |
| Fuel LX 9 Eagle 90 | Alpha NEXT Platinum alloy | Mechanical SRAM Eagle 90 | 160 / 170 mm | 17.38 kg |
| Fuel LX 9.8 Eagle 90 | OCLV Mountain carbon | Mechanical SRAM Eagle 90 | 160 / 170 mm | n/a (reference 15.97 kg) |
| Fuel LX 9.8 XT Di2 | OCLV Mountain carbon | Wireless Shimano XT Di2 | 160 / 170 mm | 15.97 kg |
| Slash 9.8 XT Di2 | OCLV Mountain carbon | Wireless Shimano XT Di2 | 170 / 170 mm | 16.63 kg |
Our take: at the bike park, this 9.8 Eagle 90 offers carbon and 170 mm up front. The Slash 9.8 XT Di2 (16.63 kg) moves to 170 mm at the rear; the alloy LX 9 Eagle 90 (17.38 kg) takes the punishment just as well.
