For the sporty mountain biker who loves long, fast rides with plenty of climbing and wants a bike that descends well, without the weight of a longer-travel trail bike. It is also aimed at riders racing regional XC marathons and long-distance events who want more comfort than a pure cross-country bike.
OCLV Mountain carbon, the happy medium. The Top Fuel 9.8 is the first carbon model of the 4th generation. The OCLV Mountain layup is designed to withstand mountain bike impacts, and the frame keeps everything that makes a Top Fuel: internal storage, four-position Mino Link and ABP pivot. Trek's lifetime warranty covers the frame.

Put simply: a round 14 kg in size M, for a build that does not cut corners on reliability. Moving to carbon plus Di2 saves you 580 g over the aluminium Top Fuel 8.
Shimano XT Di2 changes the way you shift: gears engage precisely even under load, with no cable adjustments to redo. In the workshop, we update the firmware and configure the controls to suit your habits, which takes a few minutes at handover.
The RockShox Pike Select+ with Charger 3.1 RC2 damper offers separate compression and rebound adjustment; it stays precise and stiff on the rock slabs of the Caroux. At the rear, the Deluxe Ultimate RCT has an effective lockout for long fire-road climbs.
| Model | Frame | Travel rear / front | Drivetrain | Weight (M) |
| Top Fuel 8 | Alpha Platinum alloy | 120 / 130 mm | Shimano SLX/XT 1x12 | 14.58 kg |
| Top Fuel 9.8 XT Di2 | OCLV Mountain carbon | 120 / 130 mm | Shimano XT Di2 1x12 | 14.00 kg |
| Top Fuel 9.9 XTR Di2 | OCLV Mountain carbon | 120 / 130 mm | Shimano XTR Di2 1x12 | 13.10 kg |
| Top Fuel 9.9 XX AXS | OCLV Mountain carbon | 120 / 130 mm | SRAM XX AXS T-Type 1x12 | 12.85 kg |
Our take: 580 g less than the aluminium Top Fuel 8, plus Shimano electronics. To get down to 13.10 kg, the 9.9 XTR Di2 keeps the same frame with lighter components.

LVR sizing advice From S to XL: the S rolls on 27.5-inch wheels, the other sizes on 29. The dropper post grows with the frame, from 100 mm in S up to 200 mm in L and XL; a real bonus for tall riders.

| What is downcountry? | A light mountain bike for pedalling far, with enough travel to enjoy the descents. |
| Does the Di2 need charging? | Yes, like any electronic drivetrain; we show you how to charge it at handover. |
| Can it race XC? | Yes for long-distance events and marathons; for pure cross-country, the Supercaliber is better suited. |
| Is Dark Star black glossy? | It is a deep black, easy to look after with a gentle cleaner. |
|
The LVR Cycles verdict The most balanced carbon Top Fuel: light, electronic and reassuring on descents. Its Dark Star black gives it an understated, premium look.
