For the regular enduro rider who wants a reliable, well-equipped carbon bike, able to go from regional races to all-day rides. It is also aimed at riders who appreciate Shimano's precision and want to move to electronic shifting.
OCLV Mountain carbon, the enduro version. The Slash 9.8 brings carbon to the Gen 6 Slash range. The OCLV Mountain layup is designed for the impacts and stresses of a 170 mm bike, and the frame keeps the high main pivot with idler pulley, integrated protection and internal storage. Trek's lifetime warranty applies to the frame.
| OCLV Mountain (Slash 9.8 / 9.9) | Alpha Platinum (Slash 8 / 9) | Benchmark: Gen 7 Fuel LX | |
| Level | Trek's mountain bike carbon | High-end aluminium | Enduro on a Fuel base |
| Construction | OCLV layup tuned for impact resistance | Hydroformed tubes, smoothed welds | Carbon or NEXT Platinum alloy |
| Reference bike | Slash 9.8 XT Di2: 16.63 kg (M) | Slash 8: 16.68 kg (M) | Fuel LX 9.8 XT Di2: 15.97 kg (M) |
| What it means | Lifetime frame warranty, higher-end builds | Cheaper to replace after a big crash | 160 / 170 mm, conventional pivot |
Put simply: at almost the same weight as the aluminium Slash 8, the 9.8 mainly brings Di2, a 200 mm post, a carbon handlebar and triple-compound RSL tyres. It is the most balanced build for riding hard every week.
Shimano XT Di2 keeps shifts precise even when the chain is under heavy tension, coming out of a corner for example. In enduro, the system reduces the risk of a torn cable or clogged housing; we update the firmware and configure the buttons at handover.
The 200 mm Line Dropper post gets the saddle completely out of the way on steep slopes: a real gain in freedom of movement. The Brevard RSL SE tyres, with triple compound and reinforced casing, grip well on the red earth of Lodève and resist sharp rocks.
| Model | Frame | Travel rear / front | Drivetrain | Weight (M) |
| Slash 8 | Alpha Platinum alloy | 170 / 170 mm | Shimano XT 1x12 | 16.68 kg |
| Slash 9.8 XT Di2 | OCLV Mountain carbon | 170 / 170 mm | Shimano XT Di2 1x12 | 16.63 kg |
| Slash 9.9 X0 AXS | OCLV Mountain carbon | 170 / 170 mm | SRAM X0 AXS T-Type 1x12 | 16.53 kg |
| Fuel LX 9.8 XT Di2 (Gen 7) | OCLV Mountain carbon | 160 / 170 mm | Shimano XT Di2 1x12 | 15.97 kg |
Our take: barely lighter than the aluminium Slash 8 (16.63 kg versus 16.68 kg), but with Di2, carbon and better suspension. The Fuel LX 9.8 XT Di2 offers 160 / 170 mm at 15.97 kg.
