The Trek Fuel MX 9 X0 AXS Gen 7 does away with the derailleur cable thanks to the SRAM X0 Eagle AXS drivetrain, and pairs a 170 mm RockShox ZEB Ultimate fork, a Vivid Ultimate shock and 150 mm of rear travel with an Alpha NEXT Platinum aluminium frame. Trek gives no weight for this version; as a reference, count on 16.91 kg in M, the weight of the Fuel MX 9 XT with the same frame. The Matte Juniper/Blue Sage Splatter finish is a matte forest green spotted with blue sage.

At a glance

For the mountain biker who rides all year round, including winter in the damp woods of the Montagne Noire, and wants a drivetrain that works as well after a muddy ride as on day one. It will appeal to those who would rather ride than tinker.
Alpha NEXT Platinum: first-rate alloy for a top-end build. The Fuel MX 9 X0 AXS combines Trek's most advanced aluminium, above Alpha Silver and Alpha Platinum, with the plushest spec of the alloy Fuel MX range. Trek has not published the weight of this version; the closest reference remains the Fuel MX 9 XT, which shares the same frame, at 16.91 kg in a size M. To put the material in context, the alloy Gen 7 Fuel EX frameset weighs 4.95 kg in M, the carbon version 3.31 kg.
| Alpha NEXT Platinum (Fuel 9) | OCLV Mountain (Fuel 9.8 / 9.9) | Alpha Platinum (Slash 8) | |
| Level | Trek's best aluminium | Trek's mountain bike carbon | High-end alloy, one step below NEXT |
| Designed to | Take knocks at a sensible cost | Save weight, resist impacts | Aluminium enduro frames |
| Gen 7 Fuel EX frameset (M) | 4.95 kg | 3.31 kg | not applicable |
| What it means | Heavier, but unbothered by small knocks | 1.64 kg less on the frameset | Previous aluminium generation |
Put simply: you invest in the components (electronic drivetrain, RockShox Ultimate suspension, Maven Silver brakes) rather than in carbon. For a rider who breaks derailleurs more often than uphill time records, it is a very sensible way to spend the budget.
On a cable-actuated mountain bike, mud eventually gets into the housing and degrades shifting quality. With AXS, that problem disappears: the signal is wireless, and only the derailleur needs cleaning. After a soaking ride, a gentle rinse and a well-lubed chain are enough.
In the slop, the Maxxis tyres are an asset: the Assegai in MaxxGrip compound keeps grip at the front, the Minion DHR II brakes well at the rear. The EXO+ casing protects against pinch flats on roots and stones hidden under leaves.
| Model | Frame | Travel rear / front | Drivetrain | Weight (M) |
| Fuel MX 9 Eagle 90 (RockShox) | Alpha NEXT Platinum alloy | 150 / 170 mm | SRAM Eagle 90 1x12 | 16.78 kg |
| Fuel MX 9 X0 AXS | Alpha NEXT Platinum alloy | 150 / 170 mm | Wireless SRAM X0 Eagle AXS | not published |
| Fuel MX 9 XT | Alpha NEXT Platinum alloy | 150 / 160 mm | Shimano XT 1x12 | 16.91 kg |
| Fuel LX 9 Eagle 90 | Alpha NEXT Platinum alloy | 160 / 170 mm | SRAM Eagle 90 1x12 | 17.38 kg |
Our take: if you often ride in the rain, the advantage of the X0 AXS over the RockShox MX 9 Eagle 90 (16.78 kg) is real. The simpler MX 9 XT is free of electronics but needs more cable maintenance.
