For the young club racer or the mountain biker who wants to train regularly and progress towards racing, on a serious yet sensible carbon bike. It will also suit the rider who rides a lot and wants a mountain bike that is simple to maintain.
OCLV carbon, Trek's signature. Trek's OCLV carbon comes from compacting the fibres under high pressure and temperature, a process developed in 1992 to produce frames with no internal defects. For mountain biking, OCLV Mountain is calibrated to withstand rocks and crashes. The SL 9.6 gets the SL version, the same as the 9.7: so you benefit from the complete Supercaliber carbon frame, IsoStrut included, with Trek's lifetime warranty.
| OCLV Mountain SL | OCLV Mountain SLR | Alpha Platinum alloy (Procaliber 6 / 8) | |
| Level | Trek's standard mountain bike carbon | Trek's lightest mountain bike carbon | High-end aluminium, hardtail |
| Construction | OCLV process, layup tuned to absorb impacts | Same process, optimised layup, less material | Hydroformed, welded tubes |
| Reference bike | Supercaliber SL 9.6 and SL 9.7 GX AXS | Supercaliber SLR 9.8 and 9.9 | Procaliber 6 and 8, 120 mm fork |
| What it means | Tough frame, lifetime warranty, gentler budget | A few hundred grams less on the frame | No IsoStrut or rear suspension |
Put simply: the SL 9.6 is the most accessible way into the Supercaliber world. Its frame is the 9.7's; the difference lies in the mechanical drivetrain, the Reba fork and the alloy cockpit, for 750 g more.
IsoStrut is a design apart: the shock sits in the top tube and the stays flex instead of pivoting, which limits the number of bearings and wear parts. For a mountain biker who rides a lot, that means simpler maintenance and less play to monitor over time.
The 4-piston DB6 brakes offer comfortable power for a bike of this level, with a 180 mm front rotor. The 10-52 cassette and 32-tooth chainring cover all terrain, from the fast-rolling tracks around Béziers to the steep climbs of the hinterland.
| Model | Carbon | Drivetrain | Suspension | Weight (M) |
| Supercaliber SL 9.6 | OCLV Mountain SL | Mechanical SRAM Eagle 70 | Reba RL / SIDLuxe | 12.93 kg |
| Supercaliber SL 9.7 GX AXS | OCLV Mountain SL | Wireless SRAM GX AXS | SID / SIDLuxe | 12.18 kg |
| Supercaliber SLR 9.8 XT Di2 | OCLV Mountain SLR | Shimano XT Di2 | SID SL Ultimate / SIDLuxe | 11.58 kg |
| Supercaliber SLR 9.8 X0 AXS | OCLV Mountain SLR | Wireless SRAM X0 AXS | SID Select+ / SIDLuxe | 11.38 kg |
Our take: the SL 9.6 offers the SL 9.7's frame at 12.93 kg in M; this colour is offered from S to L. For wireless shifting and 750 g less, the SL 9.7 GX AXS is the next step.
