For the tall mountain biker, often forced to ride a frame that is too small, who finally wants a carbon trail bike made to measure. The XXL is designed for an inside leg of 91 to 97 cm: the 200 mm post lets you drop the saddle completely out of the way on descents.
OCLV carbon, Trek's signature. Trek has made its carbon frames using the OCLV process since 1992: heat and pressure drive out air bubbles between the fibre layers. For mountain biking, the brand developed OCLV Mountain, whose layup is calibrated to withstand rock strikes, landings and crashes, whereas road carbon mainly aims for lightness. The Fuel EX 9.8 XT benefits from it with a 3.31 kg frame kit in M, covered by Trek's lifetime warranty.
| OCLV Mountain (Fuel EX 9.8 / 9.9) | Alpha NEXT Platinum (Fuel EX 5 to 9) | Road OCLV (Madone, Domane) | |
| Level | Off-road version of OCLV carbon | High-end MTB aluminium | Trek road bike carbon |
| Construction | Layers reinforced in impact zones | Hydroforming, tuned wall thicknesses | Layers optimised for weight |
| Fuel EX frameset (M) | 3.31 kg | 4.95 kg | not applicable |
| What it means | Lighter and livelier when accelerating | Tough, but 1.64 kg heavier | Different use, different stresses |
In short: with comparable Fox Factory suspension, the 9.8 XT weighs 15.28 kg in M, 1.86 kg less than the aluminium Fuel EX 9 XT (17.14 kg). Most of the difference comes from the frame, and a lighter frame is felt at every acceleration and on every climb.
On a large frame, stiffness matters more: the levers are longer and a stretched seat tube flexes more. OCLV Mountain carbon allows longer tubes without making the bike vague under load, and the 800 mm bar offers a comfortable shoulder width for a tall rider.
A heavier rider works the suspension harder: the Fox Float X shock, with its separate reservoir, dissipates heat better than a compact model on a long descent. We set pressure and rebound to your actual kitted-up weight, an essential step for the 145 mm to work properly.
| Model | Frame | Travel rear / front | Drivetrain | Weight (M) |
| Fuel EX 9 XT | Alpha NEXT Platinum alloy | 145 / 150 mm | Mechanical Shimano XT | 17.14 kg |
| Fuel EX 9.8 XT | OCLV Mountain carbon | 145 / 150 mm | Mechanical Shimano XT | 15.28 kg |
| Fuel EX 9.8 XT Di2 | OCLV Mountain carbon | 145 / 150 mm | Wireless Shimano XT Di2 | not disclosed |
| Fuel LX 9.8 XT Di2 | OCLV Mountain carbon | 160 / 170 mm | Wireless Shimano XT Di2 | 15.97 kg |
Our take: in XXL, this 9.8 XT remains the carbon Fuel EX with a mechanical drivetrain, simpler to maintain than the 9.8 XT Di2. The aluminium Fuel EX 9 XT weighs 17.14 kg in M versus 15.28 kg: the difference is felt even more on a large frame.

LVR sizing advice This colourway is only available in XXL, intended by Trek for 195 to 203 cm. Below 195 cm or with a short inside leg, choose an XL instead: come into the shop to be measured.

| What rider height is it for? | The XXL is aimed at 195 to 203 cm and an inside leg of 91 to 97 cm according to Trek. |
| Is the 200 mm post too long? | Not at these measurements; we check the insertion against your saddle height. |
| Can the bar width be reduced? | Yes, the Race Face ERA carbon bar can be cut; this should be done in the workshop, with measurements. |
| Is the purple the same in 2027? | The Purple Phaze/Amethyst Marble colour also exists in sizes S to XXL with a slightly different build. |
|
The LVR Cycles verdict A rarity: a Fox Factory carbon trail bike built for very tall riders, with a carbon cockpit. The amethyst-marbled purple dresses this large frame with restraint.
