For the rider who prefers to earn their descents with their legs rather than on a lift, and wants a bike that can tackle the steep red-earth slopes around the Salagou as well as the rocky trails of the Hérault hinterland.
OCLV Mountain carbon, Trek's signature. OCLV Mountain is the off-road version of OCLV carbon: the same compaction of the plies under heat and pressure, but a layup designed to withstand rock strikes and landings rather than to chase the lowest weight. On this Fuel MX 9.8 Eagle 90, the frame gets down tube protection, a storage hatch and the UDH hanger, and it benefits from Trek's lifetime warranty.
| OCLV Mountain (Fuel MX 9.8 / 9.9) | Alpha NEXT Platinum (Fuel MX 9) | Carbon Fuel EX / LX | |
| Level | Trek's mountain bike carbon, tuned for impacts | Trek's most advanced aluminium | Same Gen 7 Fuel platform |
| Construction | Plies compacted under heat and pressure | Alpha NEXT Platinum alloy | Identical OCLV Mountain carbon |
| Gen 7 Fuel frameset (M) | 3.31 kg (Fuel EX figure) | 4.95 kg (Fuel EX figure) | 3.31 kg for the EX |
| What it means | Around 1.6 kg less on the frame, lifetime warranty | Heavier, gentler on the budget | 145 / 150 mm (EX) or 160 / 170 mm (LX) |
Put simply: this 9.8 Eagle 90 is the most simply equipped of the carbon Fuel MX models. Its frame is that of the higher versions; the difference lies in the SRAM Eagle 90 groupset and the Maven Bronze brakes, two items that can be upgraded later without touching the frame.
The RockShox ZEB belongs to the enduro fork category, beefier than a trail fork: it twists less when the front wheel hits a root at an angle, and steering stays precise under braking. Its Charger 3.2 RC2 damper offers compression and rebound adjustments that we set with you according to your weight and terrain.
On the red earth of the Salagou, dry and fast in summer but slippery after the slightest storm, the Maxxis Assegai front tyre in MaxxGrip compound bites well in corners, while the Minion DHR II rear in MaxxTerra brakes effectively without wearing too quickly. Their EXO+ casing protects against pinch flats on rocks.
| Model | Frame | Travel rear / front | Drivetrain | Weight (M) |
| Fuel MX 9 XT | Alpha NEXT Platinum alloy | 150 / 160 mm | Shimano XT 1x12 | 16.91 kg |
| Fuel MX 9.8 Eagle 90 | OCLV Mountain carbon | 150 / 170 mm | SRAM Eagle 90 T-Type 1x12 | not published |
| Fuel MX 9.8 XT | OCLV Mountain carbon | 150 / 160 mm | Shimano XT 1x12 | not disclosed |
| Fuel LX 9.8 XT Di2 | OCLV Mountain carbon | 160 / 170 mm | Wireless Shimano XT Di2 | 15.97 kg |
Our take: compared with the Fuel MX 9.8 XT, this 9.8 Eagle 90 has 10 mm more up front (170 versus 160 mm) with RockShox suspension. Neither has a published weight; the alloy Fuel MX 9 XT serves as a reference at 16.91 kg in M.

LVR sizing advice Between two sizes, the smaller one makes the bike more playful in hairpins, the larger one more stable at high speed. Dropper post travel increases with size, from 150 mm in S to 200 mm from L upwards.

| Lifts or pedalling? | Both: it climbs well under pedal power and can handle a few bike park days. |
| What tyre pressure? | It depends on your weight and the terrain; we set it with you once tubeless. |
| Are the brakes enough for descending? | Yes, 4-piston Maven with 200 and 180 mm rotors, suited to long slopes. |
| Is the purple eye-catching? | Rather dark: a deep mauve that reveals its amethyst tints in the sun. |
|
The LVR Cycles verdict A carbon all-mountain bike for those who earn their descents, with a 170 mm fork that forgives a lot. Its deep mauve with amethyst tints gives it a discreet but assertive character.
