For the mountain biker who heads out for the day, strings together 40 to 60 km loops with plenty of climbing and wants a bike that is as efficient uphill as it is at ease on technical descents. It will suit the rider who goes out alone or in a small group, far from cars, in the hills of the hinterland.
Alpha aluminium, Trek's expertise. On Trek's alloy scale, the Alpha NEXT Platinum of this Fuel EX 8 sits above the Alpha Platinum of the Procaliber and Slash 8, and well above the Alpha Silver of the Marlin. The frame takes the ideas of the carbon version: interchangeable rocker, adjustable lower shock mount, adjustable progression and down tube hatch. It keeps a threaded BSA 73 bottom bracket and ISCG 05 tabs for a chain guide.
| Alpha Silver | Alpha NEXT Platinum | OCLV Mountain | |
| Level | Trek's entry-level alloy | The most refined of the Alpha alloys | Trek's mountain bike carbon |
| Construction | Alpha aluminium, hardtail frame | Alpha aluminium, adjustable Fuel platform | OCLV process tuned for impacts |
| Reference bike | Marlin 4 to 7 | Fuel EX 5, 8 and 9 | Fuel EX 9.8 and 9.9 |
| What it means | Simple and affordable, no rear suspension | 4.95 kg frameset in M, tough and more affordable | 3.31 kg frameset in M, 1.64 kg less |
Put simply: aluminium costs 1.64 kg on the frameset compared with OCLV Mountain carbon (4.95 kg versus 3.31 kg in M), but it copes better with rock strikes and car-park tip-overs. On a trail bike that goes out every weekend, it is a sensible choice we are happy to stand behind.
The 800 mm bar gives plenty of leverage to place the bike in the tight switchbacks of the Montagne Noire forests; if you have narrow shoulders, we cut it to the right width in the workshop. The 45 mm stem keeps the steering lively despite that width.
On a long ride, the 10-52 cassette lets you keep a smooth cadence on track climbs that last several kilometres. The down tube hatch takes an inner tube and tools: all that is left is to pack water and bars in your bag or pocket.
| Model | Frame | Fork / rear | Drivetrain | Weight (M) |
| Fuel EX 5 | Alpha NEXT Platinum alloy | RockShox Recon 150 / 145 mm | Shimano Deore 1x12 | 16.88 kg |
| Fuel EX 8 | Alpha NEXT Platinum alloy | Fox Rhythm 36, 150 / 145 mm | SRAM Eagle 70 1x12 | 16.58 kg |
| Fuel EX 9 Eagle 90 | Alpha NEXT Platinum alloy | RockShox Lyrik Ultimate, 150 / 145 mm | SRAM Eagle 90 1x12 | 16.58 kg |
| Fuel EX 9 XT | Alpha NEXT Platinum alloy | Fox Factory 36, 150 / 145 mm | Shimano XT 1x12 | 17.14 kg |
Our take: at 16.58 kg in M, this Fuel EX 8 weighs the same as the Fuel EX 9 Eagle 90, which adds RockShox Ultimate suspension and Maxxis tyres. Compared with the Fuel EX 5, it saves 300 g and gains a much more precise fork.

LVR sizing advice If you are hesitating between two sizes, take the shorter one for tight, twisting trails, the longer one for riding fast on open tracks. Dropper post travel increases with size; the S pairs a 27.5-inch rear wheel with a 29-inch front.

| Is the 800 mm bar too wide? | It can be cut to your shoulder width: we do it when we hand the bike over. |
| Can I carry two bottles? | One bottle cage fits inside the frame; for long rides, we also recommend a hydration pack. |
| Which post for which size? | 150 mm in S, 170 mm in M, 200 mm in L and XL. |
| Is the bronze colour common? | No, this mushroom brown is more original than the classic blacks and greys. |

The LVR Cycles verdict The ideal Fuel EX 8 for long days in the mountains, with its wide gear range and generous cockpit. The Wild Mushroom bronze gives it a natural look that blends into the forest.
