Who is it for?

For the mountain biker who rides all year round, including autumn and winter, on forest trails where roots and fallen leaves make every corner uncertain. It suits riders who value confidence over lightness.

The LVR workshop view

Alpha aluminium, Trek's expertise. For the Gen 7 Fuel, Trek did not keep the new features for carbon alone: its most refined alloy, Alpha NEXT Platinum, gets the same modular platform. The rocker and lower shock mount can be swapped to change the geometry and end-stroke behaviour, and the ABP pivot on the rear axle helps the suspension stay active when you brake. Storage is hidden in the down tube.

What it meansSimple and affordable, no rear suspension4.95 kg frameset in M, tough and more affordable3.31 kg frameset in M, 1.64 kg less

Put simply: this Fuel EX 9 Eagle 90 puts the money into suspension, brakes and tyres rather than the frame. With equivalent suspension, the carbon of a Fuel EX 9.8 saves weight, not descending performance.

In the beech woods of the Montagne Noire, after rain, the MaxxGrip compound of the front tyre makes the difference: softer, it clings to wet roots where a harder compound slides. The MaxxTerra DHR II at the rear keeps good longevity.

On damp ground, modulation matters more than raw power: the Maven Bronze brakes can be controlled with a fingertip, preventing the wheel from locking on greasy ground. After muddy rides, we recommend cleaning the fork seals and pivots regularly; we do it during servicing.

Which Fuel should you choose?

Fuel EX 9 X0 AXSAlpha NEXT Platinum alloyRockShox Lyrik Ultimate, 150 / 145 mmSRAM X0 AXS T-Type 1x12not disclosed

Our take: at 16.58 kg in M, this Fuel EX 9 Eagle 90 is the lightest aluminium Fuel EX 9 with a published weight. The heavier Fuel EX 9 XT offers Fox Factory suspension; the X0 AXS adds wireless shifting.

LVR sizing advice

Between two sizes, we recommend the smaller one if you like playing with the terrain, the larger one if you want stability at high speed. The Line Dropper post goes from 150 mm in S to 200 mm in L and XL; the S rolls on a 27.5-inch rear wheel.

Your questions

Can I ride it in winter?Yes, with a front mudguard and regular cleaning of the pivots and seals.
Does MaxxGrip rubber wear quickly?Faster than a harder compound, which is why it is fitted at the front only.
Which sizes for this green?S, M, L and XL.
Does the matt green show the dirt?It hides dried mud well; a gentle rinse is enough.

The LVR Cycles verdict

A reassuring Fuel EX 9 in damp woodland, thanks to its MaxxGrip tyres and easy-to-modulate brakes. The Juniper green flecked with sage blue suits it perfectly in the forest.

Pros
+ Very grippy MaxxGrip front tyre
+ Easy-to-modulate Maven brakes
+ Elegant juniper green
Cons
- 16.58 kg in M
- Front tyre needs replacing more often
