For the mountain biker who strings together big loops, raids and days of 50 km or more, and wants to keep precise shifting from the first kilometre to the last, even when fatigue makes their movements less precise.
Alpha aluminium, Trek's expertise. The Fuel EX 9 X0 AXS is the only aluminium Fuel to get a SRAM electronic drivetrain, and with no derailleur cable, its frame houses only the rear brake hose and the dropper post cable, both routed internally. Alpha NEXT Platinum is the highest tier of Trek's alloys, ahead of Alpha Platinum (Procaliber, Slash 8) and Alpha Silver (Marlin). The frame kit weighs 4.95 kg in M and keeps the adjustable progression of the Gen 7.
| Alpha Silver | Alpha NEXT Platinum | OCLV Mountain | |
| Level | Trek's entry-level alloy | The most refined of the Alpha alloys | Trek's mountain bike carbon |
| Construction | Alpha aluminium, hardtail frame | Alpha aluminium, adjustable Fuel platform | OCLV process tuned for impacts |
| Reference bike | Marlin 4 to 7 | Fuel EX 5, 8 and 9 | Fuel EX 9.8 and 9.9 |
| What it means | Simple and affordable, no rear suspension | 4.95 kg frameset in M, tough and more affordable | 3.31 kg frameset in M, 1.64 kg less |
In short: here you get a carbon-level drivetrain on an aluminium frame. It is a coherent choice if the precision and robustness of wireless matter more to you than the 1.64 kg the OCLV Mountain frame kit would save.
At the end of the day, hands get tired: the AXS shifter takes minimal effort and never misses a gear. On a long track climb in the Espinouse, you run through the sprockets smoothly, and the derailleur does not move a millimetre when the chain vibrates on descents.
The Maven Silver brakes, with a 200 mm rotor at the front, keep their power consistent on the descents that follow hours of pedalling. We recommend heading out with a charged AXS battery before every big ride: it comes off and is recharged in a few moves.
| Model | Frame | Fork / rear | Drivetrain | Weight (M) |
| Fuel EX 9 Eagle 90 | Alpha NEXT Platinum alloy | RockShox Lyrik Ultimate, 150 / 145 mm | SRAM Eagle 90 1x12 | 16.58 kg |
| Fuel EX 9 XT Di2 | Alpha NEXT Platinum alloy | Fox Factory 36, 150 / 145 mm | Shimano XT Di2 1x12 | 16.88 kg |
| Fuel EX 9 X0 AXS | Alpha NEXT Platinum alloy | RockShox Lyrik Ultimate, 150 / 145 mm | SRAM X0 AXS T-Type 1x12 | not published |
| Fuel EX 9.8 XT | OCLV Mountain carbon | Fox Factory 36, 150 / 145 mm | Shimano XT 1x12 | 15.28 kg |
Our take: the X0 AXS uses the suspension of the Fuel EX 9 Eagle 90 and moves to wireless. On the Shimano side, the Fuel EX 9 XT Di2 also offers electronics, with Fox Factory suspension, for 16.88 kg in M.

LVR sizing advice If you are between two sizes, the smaller gives a lively bike in slow sections, the larger gains composure as the slope steepens. Post travel goes from 150 mm (S) to 200 mm (L, XL); in S, a 27.5-inch rear wheel.
