For the mountain biker who loves technology and wants to customise how their drivetrain behaves, or for those who ride a lot and want precise shifting in all circumstances. It will also suit the rider who no longer wants to adjust cable tension.
The frame: Alpha NEXT Platinum, Trek's cutting-edge alloy. Above the Alpha Silver of the Marlin and Alpha Platinum, Alpha NEXT Platinum is reserved for the Gen 7 Fuel. No weight is published for this Di2 version; for scale, Trek gives 4.95 kg for the alloy Gen 7 Fuel EX frameset and 3.31 kg for its carbon equivalent.
| Alpha NEXT Platinum (Fuel 9) | OCLV Mountain (Fuel 9.8 / 9.9) | Alpha Platinum (Slash 8) | |
| Level | Trek's best aluminium | Trek's mountain bike carbon | High-end alloy, one step below NEXT |
| Designed to | Take knocks at a sensible cost | Save weight, resist impacts | Aluminium enduro frames |
| Gen 7 Fuel EX frameset (M) | 4.95 kg | 3.31 kg | not applicable |
| What it means | Heavier, but unbothered by small knocks | 1.64 kg less on the frameset | Previous aluminium generation |
Put simply: a tough, affordable frame, with an electronic drivetrain usually reserved for pricier builds.
Shimano XT Di2 lets you program the shifting: shift speed, number of sprockets shifted when holding the button, button functions. The M8250 derailleur shifts precisely, with no drift in adjustment over time as with a stretching cable.
The Fox Factory 36 GRIP X2 and Float X package is the same as on the Fuel MX 9 XT, and the four-piston XT M8220 brakes with 203 and 180 mm rotors provide powerful braking. The frame also has integrated storage to carry the essentials.
| Model | Frame | Travel rear / front | Drivetrain | Weight (M) |
| Fuel EX 9 XT Di2 | Alpha NEXT Platinum alloy | 145 / 150 mm | Shimano XT Di2 1x12 | 16.88 kg |
| Fuel MX 9 XT | Alpha NEXT Platinum alloy | 150 / 160 mm | Shimano XT 1x12 | 16.91 kg |
| Fuel MX 9 XT Di2 | Alpha NEXT Platinum alloy | 150 / 160 mm | Shimano XT Di2 1x12 | not published |
| Fuel LX 9 XT | Alpha NEXT Platinum alloy | 160 / 170 mm | Shimano XT 1x12 | 17.79 kg |
Our take: the MX 9 XT Di2 takes the frame, suspension and brakes of the MX 9 XT (16.91 kg) and adds electronics. The Fuel EX 9 XT Di2 (16.88 kg) offers 145/150 mm for more trail-oriented riding.

LVR sizing advice If you are on the borderline between two sizes, the shorter one favours agility on twisty trails, the longer one composure on fast descents. Cranks of 165 or 170 mm and a dropper with 150 to 200 mm of travel depending on size.

The LVR Cycles verdict A Fuel MX that combines the toughness of an alloy frame with the precision of an electronic Shimano drivetrain. Its light grey dotted with black stays discreet.
