For the mountain biker who above all wants fun on the descents without the complexity or maintenance of a full-suspension bike, for the rider who wants to improve their skills on technical singletrack, or for a tall rider looking for a tough, playful bike for weekend rides. It also works as a second bike, easy to live with, alongside a full-suspension mountain bike.
Alpha aluminium, Trek's expertise. The Roscoe 8 moves one step up the Alpha hierarchy with an Alpha Gold frame. It adopts the standards of a modern trail bike: a tapered head tube for a fork with large stanchions, Boost thru axles, ISCG 05 mounts for a chain guide and a threaded bottom bracket that does not creak. A frame that is not afraid of taking knocks.
| Alpha Silver (Marlin) | Alpha Gold (Roscoe 8) | Alpha Platinum (Farley 5) | |
| Use | Beginners and all-round riding | Playful trail hardtail | Fat bike for all soft terrain |
| Standards | Quick-release axle, 135 mm wheel | Boost148, tapered head tube, ISCG 05 | 197 mm rear hub, carbon fork |
| Stock fork | 100 mm | 140 mm | Rigid |
| What it means | Simple and affordable | Handles hard riding | Floats on sand and snow |
Put simply: the Roscoe 8 is not a more expensive Marlin, it is a different bike. Its 140 mm of travel, 2.60-inch tyres and 780 mm handlebar make it a playful descending hardtail, whereas the Marlin remains an all-round mountain bike.
The 2.60-inch tyres are the heart of this bike: run at low pressure tubeless, they squash over rocks and make up for some of the lack of a rear shock. In the rock gardens of the Caroux or on the slippery red earth of the Salagou, that extra grip makes all the difference. We set the pressure with you according to your weight, often noticeably lower than on a Marlin.
Shimano braking with 4-piston callipers and a 203 mm front rotor is built for long descents. The 150 mm dropper post lets you get your hips well back on steep sections, and the RockShox 35 air fork is adjusted by pressure: sag is set in the workshop in a few minutes when we hand the bike over.
| Model | Fork | Drivetrain | Wheels / tyres | Weight (M) |
| Marlin 6 | RockShox Judy, 100 mm | Shimano CUES 1x10 + dropper post | Tubeless Ready rims | 15.00 kg |
| Marlin 7 | RockShox Judy Silver air, 100 mm | SRAM NX Eagle 1x12 + dropper post | Maxxis Rekon Tubeless Ready | 14.15 kg |
| Roscoe 8 | RockShox 35 Gold, 140 mm | SRAM GX Eagle 1x12 | 29 x 2.60 in Tubeless Ready | 13.54 kg |
| Farley 5 | Rigid carbon | microSHIFT Advent X 1x10 | 27.5 x 4.50 in (fat) | 16.20 kg |
Our take: compared with the Marlin 6 and 7, the Roscoe 8 brings 40 mm more travel, wider tyres and much more powerful braking, while remaining the lightest of the four in size M at 13.54 kg.

LVR sizing advice This page covers the Roscoe 8 in size XL, for riders from 1.88 to 1.95 m. The trail geometry tolerates a slightly large frame; too small, on the other hand, and it would feel twitchy.

| A hardtail for enduro? | For playful descents, yes; for back-to-back very rough terrain, a full-suspension bike remains more comfortable. |
| What tyre pressure? | Much lower than a conventional tyre when run tubeless: we set it with you according to your weight. |
| Can a chain guide be fitted? | Yes, the frame has ISCG 05 mounts. |
| Is the blue paint fragile? | Adhesive protection on the down tube limits stone chips. |
|
The LVR Cycles verdict A generous trail hardtail, light and with strong brakes, that makes you want to seek out the most playful trails. Mulsanne Blue gives it a classic look that will age well.
