Trek Wahoo 20 Trail Crystal White: a little mountain bike with proper brakes

The Trek Wahoo 20 Trail is a mountain bike designed for children from 1.14 to 1.32 m who want to leave the tarmac behind. It brings together Tektro hydraulic disc brakes, a 9-speed microSHIFT Advent drivetrain and 2.20-inch Kenda Amrak tyres, for 9.85 kg according to Trek. Crystal White is a pure, bright white, set off by the dark components.

Who is it for?

For the child who already follows their parents on a mountain bike and is starting to tackle real trails: forest tracks, easy singletrack, short descents. For parents who want to give them safe braking from the start, without waiting for the 24-inch.

Alpha Silver aluminium, built here for the trails. The Wahoo 20 Trail uses Trek's Alpha alloy but kits it out like a little mountain bike: hydraulic callipers on a Post Mount fork, 6-bolt disc hubs and a narrow-wide chainring that holds the chain in place over bumps.

In other words: the 20 Trail weighs 1.10 kg more than the 20 Path, but it brings hydraulic disc brakes, a ninth gear and wider tyres. It is the choice for children who already want to ride off the beaten path.

The Tektro HD-J285 hydraulic brakes on 160 mm rotors are the big difference compared with conventional kids' bikes: they need little force at the lever and stay consistent in mud or rain. A small hand can therefore control its speed on a descent without tiring.

The 30-tooth narrow-wide chainring has alternating thin and wide teeth that keep the chain in place over bumps, with no front derailleur. The 9-speed 11-38 cassette gives a low gear for steep climbs and enough top end for linking sections.

Our take: compared with the Wahoo 20 Path, this Trail adds 1.10 kg but brings hydraulic discs, one more gear and wider tyres. The 7-speed Precaliber 20 (10.90 kg) opts for suspension rather than braking.
