The LVR workshop view

Alpha Silver, this time on a real big-kid bike. The Alpha Silver aluminium frame of the Precaliber 20 Freewheel comes with a rigid steel fork, 20-inch wheels with 32 spokes and a ProWheel 127 mm chainset whose 32-tooth chainring has a double guard. A single gear and no derailleur cable: the bike stays simple to maintain and your child can concentrate on balance and braking.

What it meansStabilisers possibleLighter, nothing to adjustMore versatile, heavier

In other words: 9.45 kg, a single freewheel gear, two V-brakes on the handlebar and a kickstand fitted as standard. Trek presents it as the transition model after the stabiliser bike, for 6 to 8 year olds.

The 32-tooth chainring is surrounded by a double guard that stops the chain from jumping off and protects trousers. Paired with the 18-tooth sprocket, it gives a taller gear than on a 16-inch: your child goes faster for the same pedalling effort.

The two linear-pull brakes bite hard on the rims. Explain to your child that they should brake progressively, with both levers, especially on descents. A helmet is still a must, and lights are a good complement to this bright red as soon as the light starts to fade.

Which Precaliber should you choose?

Our take: all four Precaliber 20 Freewheel bikes weigh 9.45 kg; this bright red is the most eye-catching. To tackle the garrigue tracks, the 7-speed Precaliber 20 adds a 35 mm fork for 1.45 kg more.

LVR sizing advice

Trek gives a range of 114 to 132 cm, for 6 to 8 year olds. On a first 20-inch bike, it is best if your child can still touch the ground with the tips of both feet when seated. Come and try it with them in Béziers: we adjust the saddle height before you set off.
