The Trek Domane SL 5 Gen 4 in Ivy Smoke, a discreet smoky ivy green, is the carbon Domane ready for all four seasons. OCLV Series 500 frame with rear IsoSpeed, mudguard mounts and mechanical 12-speed Shimano 105: it weighs 9.09 kg in size 56. Who is it for?

For the rider who doesn't put the bike away in November, the sporty commuter who wants a comfortable carbon bike with mudguards, or the cyclist who lives at the end of broken country lanes. The size range, from 47 to 58, covers both small and tall riders.

OCLV carbon, Trek's signature. Since 1992, Trek has built its frames using the OCLV process: heat and pressure compress the fibre plies and eliminate air pockets, the real weak points of a tube. The number attached to the acronym measures how refined that optimisation is; a higher number gives the same stiffness with less material. Your frame is covered by the Trek lifetime warranty.

This generation takes tyres up to 38 mm without mudguards and 35 mm with, a valuable margin for the battered roads of the Montagne Noire or well-packed gravel tracks. Once the mudguards are fitted, the compartment built into the down tube really comes into its own: tools and inner tube stay dry, with no bag swinging about.

Winter puts the mechanics to the test. The IsoSpeed decoupler, the T47 bottom bracket and the 105 cables deserve a check after the wet months; we do it in the workshop in a single visit. The 3S chain keeper also prevents a dropped chain from scratching the carbon on the climbs around Saint-Chinian.

Our take: the SL 5 Gen 4 keeps IsoSpeed and integrated storage, whereas the Gen 5 SL 5 weighs 8.84 kg in ML against 9.09 kg in 56 and takes 40 mm tyres instead of 38. Stepping up to the SL 6 Gen 4 saves 200 g, with Di2 and carbon wheels.

LVR sizing advice

Sizes 47 to 58 in this colour. If you are unsure, go for the size that leaves your upper body least tilted forward: it is the most pleasant in rain and cold.

Can I fit mudguards?	Yes, mounts on frame and fork; tyres are then limited to 35 mm.
Very rough roads?	Yes, on 35 to 38 mm tyres; for proper tracks, a Checkpoint gravel bike will be more at ease.
Does IsoSpeed need servicing?	An annual workshop check is enough, nothing to adjust day to day.
