For the cyclist replacing a ten-year-old carbon bike with mechanical shifting who wants to take a real step up: electronic shifting, hydraulic disc brakes, wide tyres. It will also suit the demanding rider who wants a clean, quiet bike that is easy to maintain season after season.
OCLV carbon, Trek's signature. Trek launched its OCLV process in 1992: heat and pressure bond the carbon layers together while driving out the air left between them, a source of weak points. The higher the series number, the more optimised the fibre orientation and the less material the frame needs for equal stiffness. With the 900, the Domane SLR gets the brand's most advanced carbon, guaranteed for life by Trek.
| OCLV 900 (Domane SLR) | OCLV 500 (Domane SL) | |
| Level | Trek's most advanced carbon | Entry-level road carbon |
| Construction | Rigid 3D moulding, reduced fibre overlaps | Same process, layup with more material |
| Gen 5 Domane frame | approx. 835 g (unpainted, ML), fork 367 g | approx. 1,055 g (unpainted, ML) |
| What it means | About 220 g less; up to 20 % stronger than the previous OCLV 800 | Tough frame, slightly heavier, more affordable |
Compared with the OCLV 500 of the Domane SL, the SLR frame loses about 220 g and its 3D-mould construction reduces overlap zones, for increased strength. It is this saving that keeps the SLR 7 AXS under 7.8 kg despite an integrated power meter.
The wireless SRAM Force AXS drivetrain is easy to set up from the SRAM app: shifter customisation, shift mode, battery status. In the workshop, the absence of derailleur cables simplifies adjustment and avoids the indexing drift you get with mechanical systems. Shifts stay precise season after season.
The threaded T47 bottom bracket and the UDH hanger are two choices made for the long term: no creaking from a press-fit bottom bracket and a standard part in case of a knock. The Aeolus Pro 51 wheels bring a real speed gain on the flat compared with alloy wheels, with a little care in a strong tramontane.
| Model | Carbon | Drivetrain | Wheels | Weight (ML) |
| Domane SL 7 AXS 1x | OCLV 500 | SRAM Force XPLR 1x13 + power meter | Carbon 51 mm | 8.14 kg |
| Domane SLR 7 | OCLV 900 | Shimano Ultegra Di2 | Carbon 51 mm | 7.66 kg |
| Domane SLR 7 AXS | OCLV 900 | SRAM Force AXS + power meter | Carbon 51 mm | 7.73 kg |
| Domane SLR 9 | OCLV 900 | Shimano Dura-Ace Di2 | RSL carbon 51 mm | 7.34 kg |
Our take: compared with the SLR 7 Ultegra Di2, only 70 g separate the two bikes: the power meter and your preference for SRAM or Shimano ergonomics make the difference. The SLR 9 saves only 390 g more.
