For the mountain biker who heads out for the day in the Espinouse or the Montagne Noire, with several hours of climbing and proper descents on the menu, and prefers to carry their repair kit in the bike rather than on their back. It suits riders from 155 to 195 cm.
Alpha NEXT Platinum aluminium, the pinnacle of Trek alloy. Trek grades its aluminium in three tiers: Alpha Silver on the Marlin, Alpha Platinum above it, and Alpha NEXT Platinum, reserved for the 7th generation of the Fuel. It is the latter that forms the base of the Fuel MX 9 Eagle 90. On the Fuel EX of the same generation, the alloy frameset weighs 4.95 kg in M, against 3.31 kg for the carbon version: the gap is real, but a well-made alloy frame takes rocks and crashes without leaving you worrying about the slightest invisible crack.
| Alpha NEXT Platinum (Fuel 9) | OCLV Mountain (Fuel 9.8 / 9.9) | Alpha Platinum (Slash 8) | |
| Level | Trek's best aluminium | Trek's mountain bike carbon | High-end alloy, one step below NEXT |
| Designed to | Take knocks at a sensible cost | Save weight, resist impacts | Aluminium enduro frames |
| Gen 7 Fuel EX frameset (M) | 4.95 kg | 3.31 kg | not applicable |
| What it means | Heavier, but unbothered by small knocks | 1.64 kg less on the frameset | Previous aluminium generation |
Put simply: with the same drivetrain, this alloy Fuel MX amounts to a complete bike capable of the same descents as the carbon 9.8. The extra grams are felt mainly on long climbs; on descents, the stability of a slightly heavier frame is no bad thing.
The integrated storage holds an inner tube, tyre levers and a multi-tool: the backpack can stay in the garage in hot weather, which eases the strain on your shoulders over a long day. The frame is also protected at the down tube against flying stones, common on schist tracks.
On the climbs, the Eagle 90 and its 52-tooth sprocket let you keep a steady rhythm on long slopes. The Bontrager Line Dropper post, with 150 to 200 mm of travel depending on size, drops right out of the way at the top of the pass to free up room for your hips on the descent.
| Model | Frame | Travel rear / front | Drivetrain | Weight (M) |
| Fuel EX 9 Eagle 90 | Alpha NEXT Platinum alloy | 145 / 150 mm | SRAM Eagle 90 1x12 | 16.58 kg |
| Fuel MX 9 Eagle 90 (Fox) | Alpha NEXT Platinum alloy | 150 / 160 mm | SRAM Eagle 90 1x12 | 16.78 kg |
| Fuel MX 9 XT | Alpha NEXT Platinum alloy | 150 / 160 mm | Shimano XT 1x12 | 16.91 kg |
| Fuel LX 9 Eagle 90 | Alpha NEXT Platinum alloy | 160 / 170 mm | SRAM Eagle 90 1x12 | 17.38 kg |
Our take: for big days out, this Fuel MX offers more margin on the descents than the Fuel EX 9 Eagle 90 (16.58 kg) for only 200 g more. The Fuel LX 9 Eagle 90, at 17.38 kg, makes less sense if you ride all day.

LVR sizing advice Hesitating between two sizes: the smaller one makes the bike playful in tight corners, the larger one makes it more composed at high speed. Dropper post travel increases with size, from 150 to 200 mm.

The LVR Cycles verdict A companion for big loops, carrying the essentials in its frame and keeping plenty in reserve for the descents. Its matte fir green speckled with blue sage is elegant and discreet.
