Trek Fuel MX 9.8 XT Di2 Miami Green: shifting without thinking about it

The Trek Fuel MX 9.8 XT Di2 Gen 7 takes the OCLV Mountain carbon frame and Fox Factory suspension (150 mm at the rear, 160 mm fork) of the Fuel MX 9.8 XT, but adopts the wireless Shimano XT Di2 M8250 derailleur. Weight not published by Trek for this version; in a size M, the Fuel EX 9.8 XT weighs 15.28 kg and the Fuel LX 9.8 XT Di2, which shares its drivetrain, 15.97 kg. The Miami Green/Aloha Marble colourway features a vivid teal marbled with soft green.

Who is it for?

For the mountain biker won over by electronics, who wants shifts that are always spot on and customisable, with no cable to clog or tension to readjust. They love technology that serves the riding and keep their kit's updates up to date.

The LVR workshop view

OCLV Mountain carbon, Trek's signature. OCLV carbon comes from compacting the fibre layers to eliminate internal air bubbles, the weak points of a frame. For its mountain bikes, Trek uses the OCLV Mountain variant, whose layup is calibrated to withstand rocks and jumps. The Fuel MX 9.8 XT Di2 benefits from it with guided internal cable routing, even cleaner with a wireless derailleur, and Trek's lifetime warranty on the frame.

Put simply: the frame and suspension are those of the 9.8 XT. The difference lies in the wireless XT Di2 M8250 derailleur with programmable shifting: a gain in everyday convenience and an adjustment that no longer drifts, not more advanced suspension.

The wireless Di2 derailleur eliminates the cable, the main source of drifting adjustment on a mountain bike: dust, mud and housing compression always end up throwing the indexing out. Here, every press gives a crisp shift, and the behaviour stays identical after months of dusty rides in the garrigue.

Shifting is programmable: you can choose the number of sprockets shifted with a long press or assign the button functions to suit your habits. We carry out these settings and Di2 firmware updates in our workshop, and show you how to charge the drivetrain before a big ride.

Which Fuel should you choose?

Fuel LX 9.8 XT Di2OCLV Mountain carbon160 / 170 mmWireless Shimano XT Di215.97 kg

Our take: with the same frame and suspension as the 9.8 XT, this 9.8 XT Di2 adds wireless shifting. The 9.9 X0 AXS moves to SRAM electronics with a 170 mm fork and carbon wheels; the Fuel LX 9.8 XT Di2 (15.97 kg in M) keeps the same drivetrain in an enduro version.

LVR sizing advice

Torn between two sizes: the shorter one for a lively bike that is easy to place, the longer one if you mainly ride fast on steep slopes. Here, only the dropper post travel varies from one size to another.

Your questions

Is wireless Di2 reliable?Yes, with no cable, the indexing no longer goes out with dust or mud.
Can the shifting be customised?Yes, the functions are programmable; we configure them with you in our workshop.
What if the battery is flat? The derailleur stops shifting: remember to charge before long rides.
Does the teal show the dirt?Less than white does; a rinse with clean water after muddy rides is enough.

The LVR Cycles verdict

The carbon Fuel MX for the mountain biker who loves the precision of electronics and a drivetrain that no longer needs adjusting. Its teal marbled with soft green sets it apart at first glance.

Pros
+ Wireless XT Di2 derailleur
