For the tech-loving mountain biker who wants precise shifting on every ride, with no cable adjustment, and does not mind charging a battery from time to time. It is aimed at riders who ride a lot and want a bike that stays dialled.
Alpha aluminium, Trek's expertise. The Fuel EX 9 X0 AXS is the only aluminium Fuel to get a SRAM electronic drivetrain, and with no derailleur cable, its frame houses only the rear brake hose and the dropper post cable, both routed internally. Alpha NEXT Platinum is the highest tier of Trek's alloys, ahead of Alpha Platinum (Procaliber, Slash 8) and Alpha Silver (Marlin). The frame kit weighs 4.95 kg in M and keeps the adjustable progression of the Gen 7.
| Alpha Silver | Alpha NEXT Platinum | OCLV Mountain | |
| Level | Trek's entry-level alloy | The most refined of the Alpha alloys | Trek's mountain bike carbon |
| Construction | Alpha aluminium, hardtail frame | Alpha aluminium, adjustable Fuel platform | OCLV process tuned for impacts |
| Reference bike | Marlin 4 to 7 | Fuel EX 5, 8 and 9 | Fuel EX 9.8 and 9.9 |
| What it means | Simple and affordable, no rear suspension | 4.95 kg frameset in M, tough and more affordable | 3.31 kg frameset in M, 1.64 kg less |
In short: here you get a carbon-level drivetrain on an aluminium frame. It is a coherent choice if the precision and robustness of wireless matter more to you than the 1.64 kg the OCLV Mountain frame kit would save.
The AXS shifter sends the command to the derailleur without a cable: no housing to get clogged, no tension that slackens after a few dusty rides. Shifting stays identical whether the bike is new or has 2,000 km in its legs.
The X0 T-Type derailleur is mounted directly on the rear axle, with no intermediate hanger to bend on the first rock. We carry out the AXS updates and pair the controls in the workshop; you can then customise your settings in the SRAM app.
| Model | Frame | Fork / rear | Drivetrain | Weight (M) |
| Fuel EX 9 Eagle 90 | Alpha NEXT Platinum alloy | RockShox Lyrik Ultimate, 150 / 145 mm | SRAM Eagle 90 1x12 | 16.58 kg |
| Fuel EX 9 XT Di2 | Alpha NEXT Platinum alloy | Fox Factory 36, 150 / 145 mm | Shimano XT Di2 1x12 | 16.88 kg |
| Fuel EX 9 X0 AXS | Alpha NEXT Platinum alloy | RockShox Lyrik Ultimate, 150 / 145 mm | SRAM X0 AXS T-Type 1x12 | not published |
| Fuel EX 9.8 XT | OCLV Mountain carbon | Fox Factory 36, 150 / 145 mm | Shimano XT 1x12 | 15.28 kg |
Our take: compared with the Fuel EX 9 Eagle 90 (16.58 kg in M), the X0 AXS brings the electronic drivetrain and Maven Silver brakes. The carbon Fuel EX 9.8 XT weighs 15.28 kg, with a mechanical groupset.

LVR sizing advice If you are between two sizes, the smaller gives a lively bike in slow sections, the larger gains composure as the slope steepens. Post travel goes from 150 mm (S) to 200 mm (L, XL); in S, a 27.5-inch rear wheel.

| How do I charge the drivetrain? | The AXS battery comes off the derailleur and is recharged with the supplied charger. |
| Can I change gear if the battery runs out? | Keep a charged battery: without it, the derailleur stays on the sprocket it is in. |
| What does this Fuel weigh? | Not published by Trek; reference: 16.88 kg in M for the Fuel EX 9 XT Di2. |
| Is the speckled grey discreet? | Yes, it is the most understated of the three colourways for this version. |

The LVR Cycles verdict The Fuel EX 9 X0 AXS offers a carbon-level drivetrain on a tough aluminium frame, for consistently precise shifting. Its lithium grey flecked with black gives it a technical, understated look.
