MTB
Mountain bikes are by definition the most versatile, they allow you to ride everywhere. The origin of mountain biking comes from the United States of America during the 70s where the redundant need is to obtain a bicycle capable of crossing rough terrain. This is how the MTB (Mountain Bike) appeared!
Knowing your discipline is essential when choosing your mountain bike. Here is the list of all MTB practices:
- XC (Cross Country)
- All Mountain
- Enduro
- Freeride
- DH (Downhill)
To put it simply, without going into the explanation of all the existing geometries, the biggest difference lies in the travel of the mountain bike. The main idea is to stay flat against the ground to increase speed and grip. For this, the suspension systems are 110-120mm for Cross-Country, 130-150mm for All-Mountain, 160-190mm for Enduro and more for Downhill requiring the longest forks and shocks.
Hardtail mountain bike
As the name suggests, these types of mountain bikes are semi-rigid, which means that they are equipped with only one front suspension.
They are often used for Cross-country or for touring, it is the lightest mountain bike.
Full suspension mountain bikes
For full-suspension mountain bikes, they are equipped with 2 suspensions, one at the front and one at the rear, which is called a shock absorber.
